...the increase in prices of clothes? It's massively helping me cut down on the amount of clothes coming through my door. The cost of one item in all my usual favourites has rocketed, I'm really having to consider each purchase much more carefully. Are you?

Brands like FatFace, White Stuff, Mint Velvet, Boden, Hush have always been overpriced for what they are though. Cheaper end of M&S quality, at most expensive end of M&S pricing.

At least with places like Next and M&S you get a choice. A work shirt for £15 or one for £70? You decide. FatFace etc are going to be £50 or £50.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 21/06/2023 08:41

I think it's noticeable that if you want good quality cotton the costs has really risen.

@ZenNudist good to know, I was looking at mint velvet recently 🤐

I also tend to look more at supermarket clothes. Or vinted. I don't think I would be willing to pay 50-100 for jumper or cardigan as I used to. Everything is so expensive now, I just can't keep up with the prices.

Mint Velvet quality is atrocious. Worse than Hush.
I ordered some t shirts because the colours looked lovely. In real life not only were the colours really muted compared to the website but the quality was like the £2.99 "slub" stuff from Primark.

Interestingly, I live near a factory shop and it stocks:

M&S
John Lewis own brand
Boden
FatFace
White Stuff
Monsoon

I don't know if that means they are all made there- presume so. Of all of these, the M&S and Monsoon are very much the best quality.

Just buy less stuff.

the low prices we’ve had for years have been completely unethical on the people making them and the environment. It’s time things go a bit more expensive

Catspyjamas17 · 21/06/2023 09:28

I think clothes are pretty cheap. I got a 100% cotton dress for £22.50 in Sainsbury's recently, lined, well-made and good quality. I got a full length formal dress from Coast for <£70 in the sale. Shop around and wait for sales.

AdoraBell · 21/06/2023 09:30

I haven’t bought anything since the January sales, but yes I have noticed prices increasing.

Scrunchymum · 21/06/2023 09:31

Yes, that’s why I only shop on Vinted nowadays.
Although I wanted some new knickers & was shocked at how much they have gone up by. I looked on asos, H&M, M&S. Jeez, just for a few pair of knicks. Bonkers.

Lcb123 · 21/06/2023 09:33

Not really - I never shop in person, and rarely buy anything new.

Catspyjamas17 · 21/06/2023 09:33

My pet hate is more expensive shops claiming that they are more ethical and charging premium prices when in fact the clothes or fabric are no better quality. and still made in the same factory in Indonesia as the clothes cheaper shops sell.

I see the price and wonder if it is 100% organic cotton, perhaps gold plated? Ah no, it's polyester. I don't mind paying for good quality and because the people making it are paid properly, but not just for a brand name or designer.

Fozzleyplum · 21/06/2023 13:20

I buy very little nowadays, unless it is from Vintage or eBay, or from Brora in the sale.

I thought perhaps I was getting a bit curmudgeonly in my attitude towards "in person" shopping on the high street, so last week when I was down in London, I made a point of having a look in the shops; it was not encouraging. A pretty maxi dress caught my eye in ba&sh. It was printed viscose, and very similar in type and finish quality, to one I bought in New Look about 12 years ago - ok, but nothing special. The price on the tag? £355! I gave up and have just ordered a couple of things in linen and cashmere from the Brora sale.

Maddy70 · 21/06/2023 13:26

I live in spain.so may not be relevant but clothes prices here are no different

I think Fatface has always been overpriced for basic t shirts and tops. I never buy from there.

If I’m going to fork out that much, I’ll buy from Cos or Arket, which has better quality.

Totally agree.
