Is it just ,e or is anyone else finding ridiculously cheap charity shop clothes lately?

I love charity shops, and find the browsing quite mindful, this past month the things I've found have been amazing. Not high end designer or anything but just lovely things really cheap.
This week alone I've found a navy wool folk jumper and silk shirt in a random rummage box 5 items for a pound, also on a £1 sale rail Tommy hilfigir baggies, Animal skirt, whitestuff cropped jeans.

At different shop I found Zara jumper , Uniqlo wool cardigan and Cambridge shirt company checked shirt - total £2.50 . They look un worn . It just looks like charity shops are really needing to shift stock.

I don't live in a posh area btw . Anyone else ?

Ours are full of overpriced primark rubbish. I haven’t been able to buy anything for ages.

Nannyfannybanny · 18/06/2023 08:00

No, just the opposite here,East Sussex, quite near Lewes, which is expensive.

blobby10 · 18/06/2023 08:15

Mine are just full of M&S, primary and George rubbish 😢😢need to find the ones in posher areas 😊

Turnleftturnright · 18/06/2023 08:22

Ours have got really expensive. £5 for a basic non branded piece of women's clothing. You can pay less and get something in new condition with more to choose from if you go to the likes of primark.

Gatekeeper · 18/06/2023 08:24

I got some absolute gems yesterday. Hobbs silk shirt, 2 pair Orvis coloured jeans, a Liberty tana lawn shirt, Poetry linen knit cardi, 2 New Weird Fish jersey long sleeved tops, pair of Gap cargo shorts for DH, new cargo trousers from M&S for me and new slim dark jeans Debenhams. Cost me the grand total of 35 quid!!!! I keep stroking them as I am chuffed to bits

Shintyhappypeople · 18/06/2023 08:24

Ours still have the same prices but they stopped taking donations for a week or two recently. Maybe they're trying to get rid of loads of stock.

triggers34 · 18/06/2023 08:25

I live in a seaside town in the South, there are lots and lots of charity shops. They must be trying to compete with each other.

My favourite shop deliberately prices very low, it's a local charity but even they've got a half price sale on, so things are 50p

@Gatekeeper its such a wonderful feeling isn't it , I'm on a high after this weeks finds. It's not just the prices I really like the clothes .

It is just you Envy

cocksstrideintheevening · 18/06/2023 08:38

Not here, they're all pricing primark shit at what you would buy it for new. Affluent SE town

Shufflebumnessie · 18/06/2023 08:43

Not myself personally but a friend of mine recently bought 5 dresses from a local charity shop. They were all Reiss, Phase Eight etc. A couple still had tags amd the rest were like new. They cost her £40 in total for all of them.
Unfortunately, I've never had such luck!

cardboard33 · 18/06/2023 08:54

Just you. I'm in SW London. Used to love a charity shop clothing bargain but now they're asking for a fiver for Primark/supermarket gear that would be less or similar price new. I've found that kids clothing and "brand name" (aka decent brands like JL, M&S) stuff in particular are much more expensive now. I've moved on to buying jigsaws as they don't seem to have increased in price.

AtomicBlondeRose · 18/06/2023 08:57

Nope, the opposite, unless it’s the 50p “we couldn’t shift this” rail. I just ordered about ten things from Vinted and then felt vaguely guilty I’d done that instead of charity shopping, but then worked out that the equivalent charity shop purchase actually cost more, even when I took P&P etc into account. Which is crazy. £4.64 in total for a pair of £1 shorts (cheaper if I’d chosen the pick up option), against £4.99 in the charity shop.

LolaSmiles · 18/06/2023 08:58

Some of my local ones are fairly priced and you can get some nice things at a reasonable price. Occasionally there's a real gem. I've got a good quality coat for not very much because it's an autumn coat and I bought in June.
I've picked up some nice JoJo Man Bebe and Mini Boden items for DC at reasonable prices

Others are mainly supermarket clothes, cheap online fast fashion (Shein, boohoo, pretty little thing, nasty gal) often with tags on, and Primark, and they're sold at close to new prices.

.

nobodysdaughternow · 18/06/2023 09:20

I can't reply right now because I am so jealous, I may get banned Grin

Ihateboris · 18/06/2023 09:34

Complete opposite here. Overpriced crap! Mainly Primark and Shein.

lissie123 · 18/06/2023 09:38

You should try the charity shops on the kings road in Chelsea. Dear god the prices- I nearly fainted. True most were stocked with designer stuff like Prada- we are talking hundreds for a pair of shoes and I just kept thinks this is effing ridiculous.

cadetmumstress · 18/06/2023 09:58

Ours are dreadful. Primark t shirts for £5 or FatFace dresses for £20!

Wyndam · 18/06/2023 10:00

I'm in a rural area so I travel about a bit. I find the big brand charity shops in the bigger towns/cities are full of high street tat. The random odd independent charity shop in tiny town or village has some great gems as well as homeware stuff too.

triggers34 · 18/06/2023 10:24

@lissie123 😱
@nobodysdaughternow sorry I didn't mean to make you jealous.

I actually volunteer in the Salvation Army I rarely buy anything though even with my 25% discount its expensive . They'd also rather rag stuff than reduce the price - I'm annoyed at this. They get new stuff from Amazon , boohoo, nasty girl etc - it is popular but not my taste .

I have actually decided to only donate to local charities , I don't care how much it is sold for as long as it helps someone.

Ours are really expensive and it’s rare to find something that is actually wearable (whatever the size). Most things should simply have been binned - bobbly Primark tops, stretch jeans where the fabric has no elasticity left, things with stains. I generally have a quick look and then go on to the books and bric-a-brac where they occasionally have nice stuff.
A friend of mine occasionally goes to volunteer for them and convinces them to bin all the crap, because nobody is ever going to buy a bobbled stained acrylic Primark top even for 5p. They’re just not.

Niftythrifter · 18/06/2023 10:35

I consider myself lucky to have picked up things like a Joseph coat and Brora fair isle cardigan for less than £10 each in my local ones.

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 18/06/2023 10:35

Near me it’s mostly rubbish (doesn’t stop me looking though) but in our nearest city it’s like treasure! Great finds!

Badbudgeter · 18/06/2023 10:44

I struggle to find stuff tbh. There is a thrift shop which is good for homeware. An independent charity which often has a nice stock of jumpers. I buy mens vintage cashmere but it’s £20-£30. My dresses/ jeans come from vinted. I won’t pay more than £10 for a dress £14ish with postage and payment protection. I’ve had some lovely, nearly new and new dresses from boden/ monsoon. Brand new jeans for a fiver.

I think part of the reason people give to charity is they want the item to be reused and Vinted does that. Clothes often seem overpriced at charity shops and are sent to clothes for cash places if they don’t sell. I’d rather sell a lightly used kids party dress for £2 on vinted than send it to a charity store where it might be priced up at £8 and end up being ragged.
