Too ashy

Hey,

Can anyone advise how to warm up ashy hair at home?

I had my hair coloured a couple of days ago (reverse balayage) but the toner used has left the lighter bits too ashy and dull, they look almost grey.

The hairdresser did say the toner would wash out a bit but how long will this take? I don't like it.

Thanks.

I’d go back to the hairdresser. I had the opposite problem where the toner was too warm and when it didn’t settle after a few washes I went back to have a different toner put on.

That's a poor service. Presumably they didn't do what had been agreed at the consultation so you need to go back and insist they re-do the toner. They simply need to apply a different direct dye toner to warm it up a bit.

Don't try and correct it yourself because if you don't have a good understanding of colour correction, you're going to make the colour worse and probably cause further damage too.

Just use T gel anti dandruff shampoo.
I had mine done last week & all the toner had gone after a week.

But you need toner of some sort or it’s just brassy bleach colour?

Plus you paid for the toner as part of the service. The hairdresser should sort it out.

I can help!!!! Honestly I’m so excited with a product someone linked to on here that I can give you an amazing recommendation.

Go to Superdrug where they have the wash in/wash out products. Get the Warm Honey Superdrug version for £2.99 and literally leave it in for one minute. Job done 😎

Toner makes my blonde look grey so I won't let them use it now but it does wash out

Cheeseplantt · 17/06/2023 18:28

I won't let hairdressers use toner on my hair as it makes my blonde look dull & grey. I prefer bright blonde!

I would speak to the hairdressers about this, or otherwise use head & shoulders to strip it out. Also interested in the another oostse recommendation of that superdrug product - try that too!

HawdMeBack · 18/06/2023 06:42

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give the clarifying shampoo a go first and if no luck, I'll try the superdrug stuff. The hairdresser is now on holiday for 2 weeks and I don't want to wait that long to get it sorted.

DO NOT USE A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO, dandruff shampoo etc.! 😳

I’m a colourist and shampoos containing strong detergents will strip out all the remaining colour and leave your hair dry, brassy looking and cause further unnecessary damage to the cuticle layer.

All bleached hair needs toning afterwards. (If the hairdresser uses a highlift tint to lighten your hair, it already contains a toner in it.)

If the toner your hairdresser uses leaves your hair looking grey and dull, they’ve simply used the wrong colour. There isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ toner but some hairdressers are rubbish at colouring beyond doing basic foils and prefer to choose a single ready mixed toner to apply to all their bleach clients. 🤦🏻‍♀️
A good colourist will mix a bespoke formula for each client depending on what’s required.

Trying the Superdrug toner sounds like a safer option since you can’t go back to the hairdresser and maybe look for a better colourist before your next appointment?

I'm losing faith in hairdressers to be honest. Been to 3 different ones in the last 12 months for colour and each have been as shit as the last.

Thanks for the advice re clarifying shampoo, I'll skip that and go straight for the toner.
