Business Casual or not?

Awaanbileyirheid · 13/06/2023 23:02

Help! I work for a small business thats pretty laid back. We wear jeans or comfy trousers and tshirt as our work is informal and can be labour intensive.
Next week I've been invited to a business conference where I don't think a pair of clean jeans is going to cut it! Most people going are discussing which Louby's to wear! Grin
I'm far too poor for Loubys or indeed any designer names!
So Next it is!
Wise stylish mumsnetters, is this jumpsuit business casual?
Thought I'd wear it with white Air Force 1's for casualness?
Be gentle, I may even have to brush my hair, trim my monobrow and put on make up!!

Business casual could be:
Smart jeans, air force ones, A silky vest/t-shirt and a blazer.

A midi dress or jumper in a smarter (heavier, not Jersey) fabric and more tailored cut. Again clean trainers fine with this.

Check #business casual on Instagram for inspiration

I agree with this

I would say a nice pair of tailored trousers (beige/grey or khaki) with a good quality white t shirt and heeled sandals/wedge would work well for business casual in the summer and feels like it suits your style more than suggesting dresses or skirts?

for example -

Sandals are absolutely not business or business casual.

Sandals are fine. The smartest dressed woman in my office today (aside from me) was wearing a beautiful black and white linen shirt dress and red block heeled sandals.

Love these. Do you know where they're from? Thanks!

Well done you !

Wow, thanks, that looks great!
I'd never have tried that! Looks a winner!

Yes NatashaDancing I don't go out much!
Local pub is clean jeans and boots or trainers! Thanks for the links, will go through them later!
Just found a pair of pale grey White Stuff trousers I forgot I had, might go with wedges!

Didn’t say sandals - I said heeled sandals or wedges. OP doesn’t sound like the type that “dresses up” so didn’t think it appropriate to suggest heels if she doesn’t have them - anything is better than AF1s that she was suggesting.

This screenshot is from Shein just to give OP an idea of what to wear - I’ve never ordered from them. My trousers in this style are from Stradivarius/Mango/Zara :)

fairycupcakes · 14/06/2023 00:40

Touch over budget but this could work dependant on what your wedges that you already have are like? @Awaanbileyirheid

Get something like this from Uniqlo. They are cheap, wear well. Are classic so will last years. Wear with a crisp tshirt and airforce.

I don't know why people are saying sneakers are not business casual. What century do you live in. President macron and his wife even wore smart sneakers to the Queens funeral. They are absolutely worn depending on the industry. Creative industries, fashion industries, outdoor industries and anything not formal they are fine.

I think op said they work in waste. Sneakers are way more appropriate with smart trousers than heels

But they must be clean

Moveoverdarlin · 14/06/2023 09:02

Why don’t you wear the jeans you have with wedges and invest in a new white top for £40, smarter than a tshirt but not as flouncy as a blouse.

No one wears laboutins anymore. They’re big brother contestants uniform circa 2008. They definitely don’t wear them to conferences on Waste.

Seriously, anything goes, jeans are fine nowadays.

The Square Mile this week does not agree.

Maddy70 · 14/06/2023 09:44

New black skinny jeans. , Jacket and a blouse no trainers, definitely a shoe 👠
Take t shirts so you can dress down if it's more casual when you get there

BarbaraofSeville · 14/06/2023 11:07

If it's hot, sandals and a midi dress, then slim 7/8 trousers and a blouse and whatever shoes you feel comfortable in. Another blouse or smartish top if you need a third outfit.

Trainers OK if very plain and dark. I got some all black chunky converse type from Rocket Dog that are just smart enough if clothed as above.

I'm a professional in an industry that produces hazardous waste and these sorts of clothing would be fine.

BestieBunch · 14/06/2023 13:12

Personally I’d wear your Jeans with your trainers and a smart shirt/top.
Jeans and trainers are absolutely acceptable as business attire these days, as long as jeans are smart not ripped and trainers are clean!
Don’t go out your way to buy something you won’t feel comfortable in.
I work in accounts for boat transport/oil company although only in the office, our directors and customers all wear jeans or boaty trousers.

Awaanbileyirheid · 13/06/2023 23:10

Dress code is business casual so I don't think jeans will be appropriate.
Industry is waste.
Suggestions welcome!

I went to a conference held by a big client in the insurance industry

I work for a building contractor. I was told business casual and opted for a skirt and a casual but nice top

Almost everyone there had dark jeans a casual but nice top. My boss wore a dress luckily it was a overnighter and we changed 😂
