Does that mean they will be testing on animals?

OP posts:
CoachBeardsJane · 13/06/2023 15:23

Anyone?

OP posts:
Alsobeyondshit · 13/06/2023 15:36

Ask L'Oréal? They're clear they don't test. But some suppliers do. Maybe someone on Mumsnet knows about how the Aesop supply chain will change post acquisition....

Sorry I more meant would that stop anyone buying Aesop knowing it's now owned by a big conglomerate instead of being a small business

OP posts:
Alsobeyondshit · 13/06/2023 16:24

They weren't a small business? Google says they were owned by a huge Brazilian company that owns Avon and the body shop

Enko · 13/06/2023 16:27

Well it will stop me due to the N*stle link. I've boycut for 23 years and will continue to.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 13/06/2023 16:31

They haven't been a small company in over a decade!

L’Oréal do not test on animals at all

Technically no they don't however read this report the conslusion if not everyone wants to read it all is

We found out the answer to the question “is Loreal cruelty-free?” and the answer is no, L’Oréal is not cruelty-free. L’Oréal states that they do not test on animals; however, they agree on & pay for third parties to test their products on animals. On top of that, L’Oréal is sold in China and is not vegan, not fragrance-free, or paraben-free.

To me that's actually worse as they hide behind others to do their dirty work

Is Loreal Cruelty-Free

Is Loreal Cruelty-Free? Here's The Astounding Truth

Is Loreal cruelty-free? Your question gets answered in this post. On top of that, I'll share if the brand is vegan, sustainable, paraben-free, and fragrance-free.

@Enko

https://inside-our-products.loreal.com/our-approach/our-alternative-methods-animal-testing

L’Oréal has been at the forefront of alternative methods for over 30 yearsIn 1989, L’Oréal completely ceased testing its products on animals, 14 years before it was required by regulation. Today, L'Oréal no longer tests its ingredients on animals. L'Oréal no longer tolerates any exception to this rule.

Certain health authorities may nevertheless decide to conduct animal tests themselves for certain cosmetic products, as it is still the case in China. L’Oréal is the most active company working alongside the Chinese authorities and scientists for over 10 years to have alternative testing methods recognized, and permit the cosmetic regulation to evolve towards a total and definite elimination of animal testing. Thanks to this, since 2014, certain products manufactured and sold in China like shampoo, body wash or certain make-up products are no longer tested on animals.

L'Oréal does not test any of its products or any of its ingredients on animals and has been at the forefront of alternative methods for over 30 years.

Surely you know to not quote a company as an unbiased opinion of themselves?

I'm well aware of what they claim. To me, they are an extremely unethical company. The link I sent above if you read it? Would explain several of the reasons why I say this. Then add in the 20% N*stle owned and we have a whole other kettle of fish of further unethical company policies.

if you want to change my mind do not quote the company at me. an unbiased opinion will never come from the shareholders. it is in their interest to claim they are doing all of this.

The L'Oréal quote doesn't say their products aren't tested on animals. It says THEY don't test on animals. The whole bit about china says that only certain products sold there aren't tested any more.
So basically it's, we want to sell our products in china so it happens #sorrynotsorry

Vyvyan13 · 13/06/2023 21:23

I just can’t see how in 2023 such a massive company can get away with essentially “lying” surely that can’t happen? Especially with all the suing cases etc.

They are so aware of what consumers want and are looking for within their products/brands. I believe they are doing all they can as a company to fight the war on such things as animal testing.

It’s because they are so big they are seen as a monster but they have the means and money of doing what they say and state unlike smaller brands who say they are everything under the sun but in actual fact they just aren’t because they don’t have the money and resources to do so.

They do use ingredients that aren’t vegan but do have vegan alternatives such as Pureology or Biolage etc.

MarigoldGlove · 13/06/2023 21:26

My dh used to work for Aesop in Melbourne. The corporate part.

It was absolutely nuts. There were so many mad rules including what subjects you were allowed to talk about and what you were allowed to eat. Small talk was absolutely not allowed. He laughs about it now but at the time he couldn't believe what was going on.

They pay someone else to do the dirty work so "technically" they can say they do not test on animals. They are not claiming "their products" are not tested on animals.

It's a small but dirty and IMO unethical wording.

Sadly yes companies get away with stuff like this.

CoachBeardsJane · 13/06/2023 22:57

Thanks all, sorry I didn't make myself clearer. I'm not a vegan but I really don't like products that are tested on animals and I really try and stay away from companies that do. I love Aesop but now they're owned by L'Oréal I'm not sure I could buy it again because the parent company does test on animals in china and they pay their third parties to test on animals. Grr it's such a shame I love their soap!!

Brianan · 13/06/2023 23:04

I don’t buy from any company owned by L’Oreal, because they do test on animals. So I wouldn’t buy from Aesop now. Or Urban Decay. Although I believe they sold the Body Shop so that’s cruelty free again.

Testing on animals is abhorrent. But it's worse to eat meat and dairy, imo. Animal testing causes fewer animals to suffer than the meat and dairy industries.
I've never understood people drawing their line at animal testing, who continue to cause daily harm with their food choices.

CoachBeardsJane · 13/06/2023 23:17

@MotherIand I didn't say I eat meat, just not vegan. I'm vegetarian who eats fish and eggs so not vegan.

I'd recommend moving to Haeckels instead. Their soap is wonderful. And none of their ingredients are tested on animals nor the final product. Everything is handmade in Margate by Haeckels themselves and only tested on humans.
