Red bumps on arms

Skimsmaybe · 12/06/2023 19:47

The internet keeps trying to make me buy things for the red bumps on my arms.

Does anyone know why these bumps happen? They look almost like a rash on my arms and are almost constant.

And do any of those products work?

With summer-weather finally here, I’m trying to sort out things like red bumpy arms and bra-back fat - as you can tell by my two posts today!

The only thing I e found that works is Ren AHA tonic. I put it on every 2-3 evenings, wash off it the shower in the morning and moisturise. It takes a couple of weeks to see results and then you can cut down. If I don't remember to stay on top of mine it comes back.

Gluten allergy?

Like @DelilahBucket suggested, I've read about women using the Ordinary's glycolic acid (an AHA) on chicken skin. Or if you wanted a dedicated product, this cream is currently 60% off:

I used to have it chronically through my teens and 20s, but started exfoliating every day (just with a wash cloth) and that seems to keep it at bay.

bibbityboppityboo · 12/06/2023 20:37

I have that! Upper arms and thighs, strawberry skin is the term I use (definitely not the medical term 😂).

I exfoliate every shower using a sugar scrub and then every other day or so use some glycolic acid on it (from the ordinary). In a 4 week period it's finally cleared - and I've tried every single trick going!

Agree exfoliation (Korean cloth type thing) and moisturiser can help. What has really helped mine through is getting hot and increased blood supply when exercising in the gym,

Most people grow out of KP eventually- one benefit of ageing 😉

Two things have worked in this house:

  1. Reducing gluten. Almost immediate effect.
  1. Washing with real soap as opposed to shower gel or similar.
Colinorpercy · 12/06/2023 23:33

I also came to say a bar of soap. This helped mine massively although they are still have some redness but the bumps have gone.

thinkfast · 12/06/2023 23:37

Omega supplements helped mine.

This is very interesting! I eat zero gluten (coeliac) but often notice it get worse when I eat a lot of dairy (at the moment I eat cheese daily and it’s as bad as it ever gets!).

But yes, I think it’s keratosis pilaris after reading that link! So thank you!

I’m in my 40s now, and have had it since puberty. I know someone said it gets better with age, but it hasn’t for me yet.

The Beauty Pie one is the one that keeps following me around the internet. But it’s £60! (As I don’t want to be a member) but is good to hear that it works!

Use bar soap and a cloth for washing and apply a moisturiser that contains urea.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/06/2023 07:37

You need a cream with Urea on it.

I’m going to try this - I’ve got it on my legs and to a lesser extent my arms. I’ve found some glycolic acid and taken pictures, hopefully in four weeks I’ll see a difference!

I’ve also heard about urea, I’ve tried the eucerin one which I like, and the altruist one is which is half the price. I prefer the eucerin one but I’ve only used the altruist one once so far so will give it a fair go!

I have this and so does my DH and, unsurprisingly, our offspring. Mine is mostly bumps rather than red dots - but actually looking at it now it is actually quite dotty.

I gave up trying to cure it years ago and have accepted it as part of my skin's character. It's really common, as this thread demonstrates, and doesn't cause any problems so I've stopped wasting money and headspace on it. I have more pressing matters of the body to attend to 😅

And there was me feeling happy that mine seemed to have disappeared. Now I know it's because I'm old!

This product definitely works for me. I used it a couple of years ago and it worked. Recently I noticed it had returned. Top of my arms and legs. After a few days using this it has gone again.

My apologies, @Pip1402 - I'm sure you have very youthful arms 😀

As you are celiac, it's worth getting your GP to check the rash. It could be a condition called dermatitis herpetiformis (despite the slightly alarming name, it is nothing to do with herpes and is not infectious). There are some specific treatments, if it is.

Take some photos as well as it is The Law that all rashes disappear on the day of a GP or dermatologist appointment 😉
