This is just an observation and I was one of these people so I’m not being judgy but… I ventured into town yesterday and I recon every third women was wearing Birkenstock Arizonas and probably 80% of those were wearing the stone colour. There was one point where a hen party walked past and they were nearly all in the exact same pair of stone Arizonas. There was also an actual queue to get into the Birkenstock shop (and I was in it)!!
It was so bad that I decided not to buy a second pair of Arizonas and bought Mayaris instead.

I don't think it's a new thing. I've been wearing them for about 20 years. I always wear Mayaris - they're the most comfortable for me. I can't say I've noticed the stone colour being especially popular in London but I haven't been paying attention.

Why do people think they are ugly? Because they are chunky?

I have lots of pairs of Birkenstocks and only one design does the farting noise thing. My sisters both have the same problem with that design.

Which design is it that you’ve found makes the farting sound?

I guess I’m just pondering how I will feel about their popularity in a years time. I’m terribly fickle when it comes to fashion and go off things that are “popular”. However, they really suit my wide feet and I can drive in them so maybe I’ll cope.

I got my first pair in 2005 and still wear them every summer (obv not the same pair!). I love them, their relative popularity had never been an issue either way.

I'm a Boston or Madrid girl myself

I sold my Arizonas as I just didn’t find them that comfortable. I live in Archie’s flip flops now.

Yorkshirelass04 · 11/06/2023 17:02

I have the Boston clogs for pottering in the garden. I can't imagine making an outfit out of them other than that.

I wear my white leather ones (Arizona I think) pretty much all summer. I did spot someone on the tube today with stone coloured Arizonas and thought about a second pair…. My husband keeps old pairs to wear around the house as slippers and the rest of us also use them. We are a big footed household!! I’ve suffered with enough blisters and cuts in the past to give up on fashion sandals.

Ah thanks, I can’t remember the name of the ones I had but they weren’t those. Looking at pictures, I think they were Arizonas. I wonder if maybe my feet aren’t the right shape and push the air down when on other people they don’t.

They’ve been pretty ubiquitous in London at least for years now though. I think I first bought a pair about 7 or 8 years ago. There’s a current trend for them but I think when that dies off they will still be popular. They’re a bit like the classic Dr Martens or Converse styles - they’re a bit of a neutral/standard shoe.

I was wearing them in London and that was over 20 years ago and I definitely wasn't the only one. Can't wear them now unless they are soft beds.

mewkins · 12/06/2023 09:38

I think you're doing that thing where because you're thinking about buying some, you've suddenly noticed other people wearing them. Lots of people have been wearing them for decades. If you look back through old press cuttings you'll see articles every year for a least the last 20 about how they're the sandal everyone is wearing etc.

HappiDaze · 12/06/2023 09:54

It's summer so of course everyone is wearing them. They always do. Probably because a load of celebrities were sent freebies they're more in the tabloids etc but people have always worn them.

I'm wearing mine too now it's summer although I prefer trainers for walking longer distances.

I've been wearing them for at least 20 years since my first pair of Madrids.

I now wear suede soft footbed Arizonas which are stone colour. I didn't realise stone was that popular or suede. The suede ones are so so comfortable though.

I prefer the look of DDs black leather ones but mine are far more comfortable.

I would have bought black leather soft footbed but they didn't have any in my size at the time so I ended up with stone suede which was not my first choice but my god are they comfy.

I love birkies but dont get on that well with Arizonas.
At the minute my go-to's are the Kyotos.
They were a godsend this weekend as you can tighten and loosen them without taking them off to get a perfect fit if your feet get hot.
