How to make thin, bitty hair look thicker?

basilandtomatosalad · 08/06/2023 11:34

I'm early 40s and have always struggled with thin, bitty and flyaway hair.
Despite best efforts it always looks so dull and lank, as well as flat.
I have a date this weekend, so want to look best.
Are those bump-it clips any good? you know, the kind that look like a hair coloured brillo pad attached to a clip and then placed under your natural hair? Thinking of trying on but don't want to look silly.
Any tips?

I have similar hair. The things that have helped the most are 1) highlights and 2) supplements (I have underactive thyroid and a thyroid support supplement really helped). However neither really helps for this weekend !

My go to is an upside down blow dry (except not upside down for the bits round the face) and then lightly tong the ends so they aren’t hanging too straight and flat.

In theory I think beach hair type products should help thicken but I’ve never been able to get on with any products in my hair, it just gets flatter!

I also have fine hair.

What works for me is upside down blow drying with a tiny spritz of volumizing spray to the roots. And, as PP said, a little tong to the ends.

I find my hair's most fine-looking when its just been washed. A bit of grease combined with a bit of dry shampoo really boosts it. Counter-intuitive I know.

So, if I had a date on Saturday night I'd wash my hair Friday morning, upside down blow dry with a little volumizing spray. Then on Saturday evening I'd hang my head upside down again, a bit of dry shampoo at the root and brushed through, then a bit of a tong to the ends to give a bit of shape.

When my hair's looking and feeling really shit, I swear by headbands. I know they're not for everyone but they're a god send and can be really dressed up for a date.

Hair mousse (Percy and Reid is good) and dry shampoo (Tony and Guy Sky High Volume is good).

tobee · 08/06/2023 21:10

What supplement do use for your thyroid @minipie ?

AC2022 · 08/06/2023 21:11

Dry shampoo works a treat for volume. Hair upside down and apply straight on to the roots.

Nobody is going to like my suggestion.

I am also hypothyroid and suffer from a thin, parched, frizz fest where once I had masses and masses of fine stranded, but wavy and abundant hair.

I have tried EVERYTHING. Highlights, protein, plopping, no poo, moisture masks, etc etc etc. All high action and multiple process efforts.

None of it worked and I just remained a completely parched and dry frizz beast.

Now I splootch the mids to ends in lots of pure almond oil and comb that through to the ends and that done, I wash it ONCE a week in warm water only and let it air dry. Zero detergents.

That is it and now it looks relatively normal again. Madly, even being this radical and hands off, it still gets a bit dry mid week on the ends (with NO washing) and I touch the ends up with MORE almond oil and tie it back in a low pony until the oil has taken hold on the ends and penetrated the frizz.

Works for me. It's insane just how dry and screwed hair can get with hypothyroid and menopause combined. I feel your pain.

I have thin flat hair and tried the bump-it things - it looked awful as my hair was too thin to hide them properly! I feel your pain, it’s completely crap. As PP have said, blow drying upside down and curling the bottoms helps a bit. Got fed up today though as bought a new hair claw and it slid out of my hair as soon as I left the house, as do 90% of the bloody things. I also find that hair looks better a day or so after washing, and dry shampoo helps too.

Stoodley · 08/06/2023 21:31

Two tips:

Neal and Wolf volumizing lotion. I use a small amount prior to blow drying and it’s amazing. Lightweight and volume boosting.

nioxin shampoo and conditioner

I went short in the end. Fortunately it suits me!

PlumPeony · 08/06/2023 21:52

I have fine hair as well, I sometimes lose more hair which makes it look even thinner. I'm eating Viviscal supplement, and also only wash hair approx once a week (every 5 days - tbh, lockdowns helped to get to that point few yrs back). But short term fix, with this hair "brush" (BaByliss Big Hair Rotating Hot Air Blow dry Brush, Dry and style in one step, 50mm - £41 on amazon on offer) I've managed to make the hair look better/ fuller. Good luck with your date x

minipie · 08/06/2023 22:23

@tobee it was this one. The hairdresser said I had loads of new hair growing! I ran out and so haven’t taken it for a while - must re order.

Use dry shampoo

Queen for a day thickening spray works wonders

Roussette · 08/06/2023 22:28

I hate to even think about recommending this in case one day I can't get hold of it but I have thin hair and when I have dried it I use a fingernail amount of this rubbed into my hands and then textured through my hair and it creates such volume

I have terrible thin hair. I wear extensions and have done for 12 years

HotSince82 · 08/06/2023 22:31

I've been using bioidentical progesterone cream and my hair is almost back to pregnancy levels of thickness.

Post thirty five a lot of hair thinning can be attributed to the drop in progesterone.

Hotchick1972 · 08/06/2023 22:46

I’ve had terribly thinning hair for a long time - noticing reviews on Ocado I’m currently using plantur39 shampoo
and seeing results! I wash my hair every other day and make sure the shampoo is on hair for at least 2 minutes
I was VERY sceptical but it seems to work for me so far…..

Solonomi · 09/06/2023 08:25

I found NOT using a hairdryer with ionic or ceramic technology really helped. Most hairdryers come with it so try a big standard hairdryer. It’s been a game changer for me! The ionic/ceramic hairdryers are designed to smooth and soften the hair, which is terrible for thin or fine hair roots!!

Solonomi · 09/06/2023 08:26

*bog not big!

HotSince could you possibly link to a product? I am so sad about my thin hair and would love to try to improve it! Thanks! x
