90's Manc Indie / Ravers, what are you wearing in 2023??

SequinDiscoBiscuits · 08/06/2023 10:34

I'm 45, very much did the whole NW 90's thing in the 90's- clothes and music-wise.

I'm single, kids grown up. Regularly go to gigs etc and feel my clothing choices fit in there, but not so much in everyday life.

I wouldn't go as far as to say "mutton", more "time-warp" as I have gleefully embraced the resurgence of some 90's styles.

My wardrobe over the years has inadvertently become a very strange blend of smart office wear, casual loungey/scruffs, smart going out, gig wear, and hiking/outdoor stuff. So putting outfits together has become a headache and there's no cohesiveness. (In any given week I can appear as a banker, a teenager, a camper)...

Always been non-conformist in character but dressed I'd say in a classic way with a slight boho or grungy twist on the whole.

Live rurally and don't really do dresses unless it's 25+ degrees or an occasion. I feel uncomfortable in and I'm not feminine enough for the floral dress/trainer vibe.

I'm getting older and care less about others opinions so want to dress for who I am, not what society generally expects someone to look like at middle age.

I'm 5'8, wide shoulders, narrow hips and slim, but the waist is expanding..

Where should I be shopping and anyone else from a similar era, what are you wearing?

Heh. I find I'm actually living in quite similar things I'd have worn in the mid 1990s at the moment. Skinny t-shirts and high waist wide leg/flared jeans with pumps. I've also got a long skirt with a sort of floral/Indian sari type pattern from Urban Outfitters which would not have looked out of place in 1994 which I wear with vest tops.

I'd not wearing tiny strappy dresses with trainers so much as I would have worn then or very tight short skirts. Generally my hemlines are a bit lower! I do wear fairly short shorts in the gym though.

Catspyjamas17 · 08/06/2023 10:58

My jeans came from Boden though 😀Back then it would have been Miss Selfridge or TopShop.

I get a few things from Stitch Fix, then my favourite all round shop is probably Oliver Bonas. Like the laid back but slightly different style and the jewellery is really good. The jeans are the only thing I've ever bought from Boden. I've had the odd thing from Urban Outfitters when ostensibly I've been shopping for DDs. Have had the odd top from Mint Velvet and a very nice dove grey leather jacket in the sale a few years ago. Other than that I get basics from M&S and TU (Sainsbury's) or John Lewis. There is a big Sainsbury's near me and a Waitrose so I can pick up things there directly or click and collect.

I've hit my middle age emo phase, wear a lot of black, got tattoos and piercings, leather trousers and skinnies and boots mainly.

I bring the tone of my corporate office down a bit 😁

SequinDiscoBiscuits · 08/06/2023 11:01

I never had the heart to get rid of aaaaall the baggies.. but maybe a more modern/tailored version would be nice and yes, I do like a long skirt.
Only have one at the mo so that's a good shout thank you.
Skinny t-shirts are too unforgiving on the belly for me.. Still have a few originals kicking about that I can't part with for nostalgia purposes though!

Argh this is me. Nearly 50 and I live in fishnets and short denim skirts and tees. Definitely 90s. Maybe even 80s…

my three young adult children like my vibe so I try not to fret too much - I figure if I was totally awful they’d let me know. But I do get a lot of looks from proper adults…

Love it!! I feel the next 10-20 years are going to see a lot of this from our generation.

Been considering a half-sleeve myself too and I'm not listening to the cries of "mid-life crisis" from the kids 😆

Oh fuck it, my mid-life crisis is the most fun thing that's happened to me in years 😆

Do it, and make your kids run screaming from any room when you put music on, going 'muuuuuum that's just noise!'

Very fun.

SequinDiscoBiscuits · 08/06/2023 11:09

@Catspyjamas17 oooh yes I have Boden wide-leg jeans that I'd forgotten about.. love Oliver Bonas stuff too, shall have a mooch..

Urban Outfitters is aimed at the yoof but there are definitely some items which appear to 47 year old me.

Some nice boho and denim long skirts here - though personally I'd make sure my top met the top of my skirt these days.

Awww I used to absolutely love my long denim skirts, body and chokers!
I've a midi from 2 winters ago but for me only works with knee boots.
Might just time for a new long one 🙂...

I wear slightly oversized, minimalist stuff - Arket & Cos mainly. In the 90s I also wore plain oversized shirts, t-shirts, straight jeans and DMs, nothing too feminine. My fashion icon was K. Cobain :).

LoobyDop · 08/06/2023 19:12

I was a neat and tidy indie girl (I wore docs, but I kept them shiny 😂) and now I stick pretty much with preppy/classic type stuff. Ankle-grazer jeans, tshirts, blazers and trainers for day. Actually similar but nicer materials and softer cuts for going out. My jumpsuit wardrobe is extensive. Mostly shop online these days, I couldn’t even say where I’d head to first if I was shopping in Manchester. Probably M&S, I’m afraid. And Uniqlo.

FiaMarrow · 08/06/2023 19:14

I'm 45 - in the 90s I wore a lot of black, vest tops, DMs, long skirts, cargo trousers. I shopped in New Look because it was the only shop in our town. I still shop in New Look and I've got my eye on some 2023 cargo trousers 🤣

AndYou · 08/06/2023 19:15

Today I wore skinny jeans and a very loose blue cheesecloth top. I still wear combat trousers, DS approves surprisingly.

I bought some khaki satin combats and wore them with a cream t.shirt and chunky wedge sandals for my wedding anniversary dinner this week.

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 08/06/2023 19:16

Just came on to suggest urban outfitters. Only problem is the sizing, a 10/12 seems to be labelled as an extra large.

Yetisrus · 08/06/2023 22:01

In the early 90s I wore tie-dye, fringed skirts, patchwork trousers all with DMs, summer was denim cutoffs with a waistcoat and dms, then moved on to Grunge.

Now at 45 I wear skinny jeans (sometimes with rips), t-shirts, plaid shirts, jumpers, short skirts with biker boots, suede trainers, leather biker jacket or a military inspired (its got metal buttons) jacket.

I still dress kind of how I did but slightly less scruffy.

Work is another thing, today I wore ankle grazing trousers with ballet shoes. Ever so respectable 😂

Maia77 · 08/06/2023 22:18

A lot of us seems to be the same age, 45 😁. 👋

dancingqueen345 · 08/06/2023 22:22

Uniqlo - such good basics, more interesting cuts in pants and really good quality

nickelbabe · 10/06/2023 19:47

I wear skirts almost exclusively.
I will only wear skirts and dresses with pockets, and I've made myself a few Gretel skirts from Mother Grimm.
I pair those with loose teeshirts and cardigans (usually sweatshirt type hoodies).
And I wear socks and t-bar shoes (in summer. In winter it's thick woolly tights and dockers or chunky shoes)
