Hair colour question

Any hair/colour savvy people out there? How do I get to choose my colour at the salon? Will I get to look at a book and choose a colour? If so, I want to see the book before I go so that I’m not making a quick decision under pressure if that makes sense? Or is there a certain range of colours I will need to stick to because of my dark hair?

I know nothing about hair colour and never dye my hair but am now well into my 30s and starting to think about colouring. I have chocolate brown hair which is naturally lighter at the ends so it looks like I have balayage/baby lights if my hair is straight (which I never do, I leave it curly) and very few greys (for now!). I can’t decide if I want a different look or just to give it an all over more evened out natural colour.

Any advice? Should I just stick with it natural? I may be being silly but feel a bit bored with my hair as I can’t really try any funky cuts due to my curls. I am kind of forced to keep it a good length to stop it springing up into a big bushy mane. Also not very keen on short hair and I want to be able to put my hair up in ponytails and buns, so feel like colour is the only option I have for a bit of a change. It’s about boob length at the longest parts with shorter layers around the face and top layers.

If I could turn back time and stay my natural colour I would. Once you start it’s hard to go back! And it costs a fortune and three hours out of my life every 5-6 weeks sat with foil on my head! Still, hope you find what you’re looking for and yes they will show you the colour books and advise what they think you should have etc.

You’re better off going with some photos of what you want and they can advise you on how to achieve it. They do have books though

100% agree with @Whoknowswhatanymore! I only started colouring my hair at 37…a tiny sprinkling of silvers at that point - not noticeable. It changed the texture of my hair quite significantly (thicker but not in a good way) and while it always looked good for the first week after colouring, the regular maintenance was a bugger. Then I started playing around with highlights and it escalates quickly into an expensive and annoying habit! Am 46 now and gave up colouring 6 months ago…the grow out it PAINFUL and I’m dealing with two tone hair but am looking forward to just being my natural self (hopefully in about a years time). If I could turn the clock back and not colour, I would have.

I only colour my greys to match my natural colour so went with my hairdressers advice but my salon offers a free consultation. You can book a free consultation to look through the swatch book, talk through what you want and get their advice and also have your patch test done. It may be worth asking for similar

Well it sounds bloody lovely as it is!

Do you go to a curly hairdresser? I agree that a consultation is probably the best thing to do.

No, I don’t go to a curly hairdresser. There isn’t one anywhere near me at all. I guess im just bored of my hair and there’s not really much I can do with it that’s also practical for having a baby under 1 haha.
