Have you ever complained to your hairdresser? Feeling very awkward, but unhappy with colour 😬

Hi,

Had my hair coloured last week. Was supposed to cool down my warming balayage and cover the grey at the roots. I have naturally dark hair. Grey coverage was great, as was blow dry. There was a lot of toner and waiting for toners to take. A bit of commotion at the sink actually 🤔

I did have a bit of lightening on the balayaged section, with the idea that the toner would take better. I could see it was still quite warm even after all that, but I wasn't unhappy with the results, possibly because the blow dry was so good. Since washing it myself though, I just see orange. There are a couple of pieces around my face which are particularly tangoed 😬 and that's exactly where I don't want it, as it just doesn't suit my skin tone at all. It was over £200, so on balance, not really happy.

I'm planning on calling the hairdresser, but I'm not really sure how to handle it. I certainly don't want to be paying any more money to fix it.

Has anyone been in this situation? How did you handle it and was it resolved?

TIA

It'll be fine. Just ring or pop in. They'll sort it for you.

Will I be expected to pay?

Yes this happened.to me and now l colour my own hair for a fraction of the cost with much better results.
The hairdressers were a bit off to be honest, nowhere near as friendly when they were doing initial colour, and when l still wasn't happy with the correction one of them flounced off in a strop, but it was their mistake and I'm not afraid to use my voice. My hair was bright orange, it looked so awful, l wanted to go a bit darker, so they initially coloured it from dark blonde to almost jet black, then when l went back for correction it went bright orange, and the best they could get it was an awful brassy ginger. Took me ages to get it back to how l wanted.

Of course not.

I said it was lovely, walked out and cried then booked in to a different hairdresser.

Surely no British woman could do anything else?

Will I be expected to pay?

No. I certainly wouldn't. I can't imagine they would even ask .

KiwiMum2023 · 06/06/2023 17:46

Have complained numerous times. I’ve always been invited back. I’ve never gone back again after the correction. I have been to many hairdressers! One particularly excruciating situation was when I had highlights and half an inch of roots were visible. Duly complained with a photo and they ‘fixed’ it. It was still crap so had to go back again a third time. Ridiculous and mortifying for them. I know I have high standards but I pay a lot so expect it to look decent.

Bibbetybobbity · 06/06/2023 17:46

I’ve done this. My hair colour is absolutely extortionate (I actually haven’t been for a while- but ordinarily) and the sheer price forced me to overcome my awkwardness. I went back and she re-did it, no extra cost.

Summerslimtime · 06/06/2023 17:48

I had my highlights redone. It was even worse and trashed my hair. She ended up giving me a full refund.

Thebigblueballoon · 06/06/2023 17:49

Yes, kind of. And what made it even worse is the hairdresser was the girlfriend of fiancés friend.
I’d gone to get my red hair dyed blonde (long, expensive procedure). Turned out that on the day another staff member had called in sick, and she was juggling four clients at once. Left on my dye for ages. At the end of the session, the top layers of my hair were blonde and you could see lots of ginger in the layers underneath. It was also way blonder than expected.
I must have looked shocked and I told her I’d like to book another appointment straight away so it could be evened out (it really did look daft). Went back the following week and had to pay in full to get it done again. I was too embarrassed and cheesed off to argue. Paid and never went back.

Justwishtherewasmoreeffort · 06/06/2023 18:02

Yes I did once - had highlights and they definitely were not as light as I expected - I’m an ash blonde so to get a highlight to pop shouldn’t have been an issue. I could literally only distinguish a slight lightening of the colour.

So I called very calmly and explained that I was disappointed and also apologised that maybe I should have been more forthcoming with saying that I wanted the highlights to be lighter, she had actually thought I wanted a subtle lightening

Anyway, they redid it free of charge so no complaints!

sadsack78 · 06/06/2023 18:03

Don't feel bad about asking for it to be redone.
I think every woman I've ever known who has any kind of blonde or highlights put in their hair on a regular basis for long enough have at least one experience of getting tango'd or the colour coming out too warm or brassy.

Colouring hair is a skill some hairdressers are better at than others, especially doing good blonde tones.

If you feel bad about being negative you could start by saying you were very happy with the grey coverage and you loved the blowdry, you just want the highlights corrected?

shmiz · 06/06/2023 18:05

I had a colour that went wrong -
I phoned up the hairdresser and said I d had a few people say to me it didn’t look right !!!
hairdresser sorted it for free 👍

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 06/06/2023 18:11

I had a hairdresser who’d never highlight my hair the way I wanted it (not hard!) and I’d used her for years, I went back once or twice but after a while I changed.

I had another hairdresser I used for a few years, wanted pink highlights but when they were done I didn’t realise how bright they were and they were happy to change and I returned.

Another hairdresser I went to, one I’d seen for ages tried something different on me, dark hair blonde highlights as a surprise. I hated it and made him change it back. Another hairdresser did balayage at cost of over £200 and said if I wasn’t happy I could return and get it fixed for free. I wasn’t happy and returned to get it fixed for free and all the time she complained , saying I was getting it done again for free and being decidedly less friendly than before.
