Shampoo for oily fine flat hair?

Justkoko · 06/06/2023 07:33

As above, my hair is very fine, flat and has no oomph. I need something that voluminous but also cleans well. I know the current thing is to avoid sulphates but tbh I think my hair may do better with them.
In the past pantene always gave me silky shiny hair albeit flat but I'm not sure if they've changed the formula.

Currently using aveeno acv or faith in nature. Don't use conditioner. Have to put elnett volume mousse in roots but that tends to leave buildup on my scalp.
Can you recommend something?

I have a similar hair type, and went through a phase of trying many different shampoos (when my favourite, Aussie Long, was discontinued!). I’m not sure what your budget is OP, but the ones I found best are:
Kerastase Densifique (shampoo, and a tiny bit of the conditioner on the ends)
Body Shop Ginger shampoo (meant to be anti-dandruff, but worked well for me)
Aveda Botanical Repair (my current favourite!)

If you live in a hard water area it may be worth looking into shampoos that are suitable for hard water?

missmoon · 06/06/2023 08:25

It might be worth looking at the Aussie shampoos range too?

Bananabreakfast123 · 06/06/2023 08:29

I like lush shampoos for my fine oily hair. They're all natural so I find they don't weigh it down and stays cleaner for longer - it's actually still clean at the end of the day. I use seanik which has a bit of salt in it to give a little volume.

TheOGCCL · 06/06/2023 08:33

Tresemme Hydrate and Purify could be worth a look

supercalifragilistic123 · 06/06/2023 08:37

I really rate the aussie SOS range atm.

I have also found it helps to use a clarifying shampoo like head and shoulders once a week or so to help remove product build up.

I have tried sulphate free and my hair looked amazing for a while but then looked greasy and needed washing everyday which I'm definitely trying to avoid!

Justkoko · 06/06/2023 08:41

Do any of these ones give a bit of volume too?
As I said I use mousse to give root lift but not sure if I could be using something better.

Following in case the holy grail is out there 😂

The Apple cider vinegar one by OGX is the best I've found OP but I've basically given up. Most of the shampoo on the market seems to be for dry hair instead of oily.

traintraveller · 06/06/2023 10:51

Not sure what your budget is OP but I have similar hair and find christophe robin cleansing paste for fine hair helps with oil and volume. The one for women is rose scented and awful but there is a mens version that smells much nicer.

Nexxus Keraphix (Boots has them on offer quite often), gives a little volume without leaving a weird coating. I can go a record 3 days between shampoos with it.

riverlodge90 · 06/06/2023 11:20

Head and shoulders then no conditioner

BlameItOnTheGoose · 06/06/2023 12:00

I have this hair too 😩

For me, the best routine is to shampoo thoroughly every day (switching the brand up regularly) and then spray on Aveda thickening tonic before blow drying.

I also avoid conditioner. And I believe soft water preferable to hard water.

I don't colour my hair anymore, but highlights add some body and can give the appearance of volume, if done well.

And I try to maintain a hair style that suits my hair type, eg a bob.

Solidarity!

Discoverysnakes · 06/06/2023 12:15

I’d second Aveda botanical but it is £££. I’ve also found sulphate free not great but this one seems to really work. I do then have to use a bit of volumising spray as well.

spiderlight · 06/06/2023 12:44

The best one I ever found was Body Shop Fuji Green Tea, but they bloody well discontinued it! Champo Pitta shampoo is really good though (pricey but you can buy a trial size to see if you like it), and Ouai also do a good fine hair shampoo.

Oh that's interesting. I splashed out on the rose one as I really liked the salt scrub from that same brand. The rose shampoo really is rubbish! For the price it's so disappointing, my hair hardly even feels clean straight after washing.

shitafrick · 06/06/2023 20:39

Sounds like my hair and the best shampoo I've found is the KMS volume one! Discovered it via my hairdresser. It seems pricey but a bottle will last me 6 months as you don't need much.

I condition the ends then shampoo twice.

Bookworm333 · 06/06/2023 20:43

John Frieda weightless wonder, or the volume lift one. They seem to have a new one called profiller which is also meant to help with volume, but haven't tried that yet.

cujo · 06/06/2023 20:49

Avalon rosemary shampoo and conditioner

hands down the best option if you don’t want to switch about. My hair normally gets used to an option but I’ve gone through a couple of bottles of this and haven’t needed the switch

Lemonaida · 06/06/2023 20:55

My hair is like this and I hate it!! Keen to try some of these and will follow the rest of the thread if any one has life changing tips!

coxesorangepippin · 06/06/2023 20:58

Redken used to do an awesome one, got discontinued

Alberto balsam tea tree tingle is fabulous

And the L'Oréal clay, green bottle

Leela2 · 06/06/2023 21:18

I like Elvive Clay oily roots shampoo, seems to give it a bit of body too.

TwoRedKittens · 06/06/2023 23:31

I also have fine hair that gets oily very quickly. After two decades of trying a million different products and methods with very little success, I've finally found something that works! I'm embarrassed to say that, apparently, I was washing my hair all wrong and never managed to get my scalp properly clean despite washing my hair every morning. 🙈 Not really a shampoo problem, just the wrong technique. These two videos have been an absolute revelation:

I did purchase most of the products suggested by the Blowout Professor guy from the videos and am extremely happy with them, but just using the right hair washing technique is what makes the biggest difference for me and also works with my DH’s cheap supermarket shampoo for oily hair. I promise I‘m in no way affiliated with that YouTuber, just still beyond thrilled at not waking up with disgusting oil slick hair in the morning any longer.

chalkyc2 · 07/06/2023 06:32

I have fine flat tends to greasy hair - Aveda is amazing. They have a volume range and some of their volume products are good too.
