Dandruff on dark hair (probably psoriasis!)

Has anyone else got psoriasis on their scalp? I had it when I was young and had to use tar (90s), I had a brief blip in my 20s and now I'm 37 and my psoriasis has seriously kicked up. Especially on my scalp.

I've tried medicated shampoo and nothing is working. I was hoping to grow out my highlights since my natural hair is dark brown and the roots are about 3inches long (dark dark brown next to sandy highlights!).

But now my psoriasis is quite bad I'm wondering if blonde would make it less obvious.

Does anyone else have similar issues? Any tips and tricks? I've also tried ginger shampoo.

I have requested some advice from my GP and I'm still waiting. Pharmacist couldn't recommend anything else than various grim shampoos 😂

I have scalp psoriasis, had it for many years, nothing has helped long term unfortunately. Betnovate scalp solution helps for a bit, but it comes back. I think it's recommended these days to cut dairy, sugar and carbs out of your diet to see if there's an improvement.

There is a foam you can use, can't remember what it's called though.

I’ve had scalp psoriasis since I was about 20, I’m 52 now and I’ve tried everything. Some shampoos made it worse - Plantur was recommended and after one use I gave the rest of the bottle to a friend and Forever Living Aloe Shampoo and Conditioner was recommended to cure anything and everything but I had a terrible flare up but I made a note of the money back guarantee and got a refund. Philip Kingsley itchy flaky scalp shampoo is good, doesn’t stop a flare up but my scalp isn’t irritated by it. If you haven’t tried it before I recommend getting it from QVC as they have a no quibble returns policy so even if you use half the product you can still return it if you don’t get on with it. I’ve stopped trying to treat it as it’s either flared up or not. Stopped dying my hair at 43 because I couldn’t always get it coloured when I wanted because of my scalp. Stress causes flare ups with me so I do try to keep calm as much as possible.

Thanks both!

I think mine is stress too tbh! And have a very emotional over tired child at the moment. 😬

I'm wondering if I've had psoriasis for a while and hadn't noticed as my hair was blonder.

A family member has this they used to make a concoction of coconut oil, aloe gel & Greek yogurt and massage on scalp in shower, leave to soak in for 5-10 mins and wash out with tea tree shampoo.... it stops the itchiness too. And makes hair look great too. Hope this helps

I was surprised to find T-Gel doing the trick with my latest flare up, I hadn't used it for years as it never did much.

However when I used to dye my hair my scalp was always at its best after getting my colour done, professionally or at home. It always cleared things right up for a while - don't know why!

Dandruffpandruff · 04/06/2023 20:30

@Littlesprouts I have found that my scalp is in better condition after colouring too. Especially when I used to dye it brown tones!! Maybe I should just do it? Tomorrow 😂

Thank you @loveisstrange - I might try coconut oil and aloe. But leave the yoghurt out as the texture makes me feel a little funny.

See a dermatologist? Might not be what you think it is.

Agree about dyeing, it stings at the time, but afterwards my scalp is clear for a bit.

Mine cleared up each time I was pregnant. A bit of an extreme way to cure it though and it came back with a vengeance afterwards!

Nizoral shampoo is very effective for this.

Dandruffpandruff · 05/06/2023 12:29

@humblemeep I'm going to go for it with dying. But choosing a colour is going to be very difficult 😂 I'm a fuss ass

@borntobequiet I've tried Nizoral and it didn't do anything for me. 😔
