Going to wedding in July. Is it ok these days to wear ivory ?

I guess the question is with all the many beautiful shades and colours out there...why ivory?

Trickofthetrade · 03/06/2023 19:31

Christ. Thanks for the really polite answers . Don't want to look like a dick. It's not a dress...suit. I'll leave it.

And yes, of course I can wear something else.

Having seen what the Royals wore at the Jordanian royal wedding this week I see no problems at all.

If I saw someone wearing ivory at a wedding I'd think (1) they were attention-seeking, and (2) trying to piss off the bride. Or (3) completely clueless about norms surrounding western weddings and didn't have any friends to tell them it's not appropriate.

That's me in a nutshell. I am a loner, who wants to piss the bride off, while drawing attention to myself .

Very much depends on the bride! Some would be upset as you can see. Can you ask her or someone close to her?

EbonyRaven · 03/06/2023 19:41

NO.

EvenmoreDisorganised · 03/06/2023 19:42

I'd say no too, even if the bride doesn't mind, its just not the done thing and will draw attention in photos.

BCBird · 03/06/2023 19:44

There are many other colours. No to ivory.

JMSA · 03/06/2023 19:45

NO!

Absolem76 · 03/06/2023 19:45

It's only on Mumsnet that anyone cares if a wedding guest wears ivory I haven't met anyone in real life who would bother.
As long as its not a wedding dress why on earth should it matter what a guest is wearing?

SuperbSummer2023 · 03/06/2023 19:48

Yes, it's totally fine. Ivory or white or any colour you like...

IF you're the bride, if you're not then it's a hard NO.

This is true. Aside from wedding dresses and very detailed suits, ivory rarely looks great.

Namechangeed · 03/06/2023 19:52

Oh! Forgot to add, don't wear black either 🙂

Knotted1 · 03/06/2023 19:53

No I don’t think so, there are so many other colours why risk it? The bride is unlikely to say anything even if she is secretly annoyed and other guests will probably be judging you. If you’re in photos you will stand out and not in a good way!

I've never had a discussion about this in real life. Probably because I've never seen anyone in real life wear white to a wedding, apart from Pippa Middleton being the maid of honour in white, but that's not a normal event.

Most people in your life would not really discuss it because it never comes up.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/06/2023 19:08

No is a complete sentence.

Eh?

ANewAdventure · 03/06/2023 20:00

I think there are plenty of situations where it would be fine - you know the bride wouldn’t care, it’s heavily patterned, etc - but as a general rule then no I would not wear ivory.

LadyBird1973 · 03/06/2023 20:00

I wouldn't. Even if your outfit is as far from bridal as it's possible to get, people will talk about you and be judgy.

booksandbrooks · 03/06/2023 20:01

A big fat no from me.

Even if the bride doesn't mind, and I wouldn't it's just best not to. You'll put someone's nose out of joint just by showing up. Don't be 'that guest.' It will be commented on.

Anaemiafog · 03/06/2023 20:02

No. It's such bad etiquette. You might find nothing is said but they will be thinking or talking about you.

Winederlust · 03/06/2023 20:06

I personally think you can wear whatever the hell you want to a wedding. However there are million other colours you could chose from, so don't see why you would chose ivory. .

Isthisreasonable · 03/06/2023 20:06

My exMIL wore ivory to my wedding. I wasn't bothered but it was the talk of the wedding and I had a stream of guests telling me how offended they were on my behalf. Best avoided.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/06/2023 20:07

@midsomermurderess - not a longstanding MNetter then?
