Can anyone recommend a blond highlighting/balayage kit I can get from the supermarket? I have very dark brown hair and would like to do something like this - blond bits around the front only.

See a professional. Those kits are crap.

I usually do get my hair done at the hairdressers but can’t afford it this year, so am looking for the best worst kit 😅

Call some salons in the area see if they need any hairdressing models or the local college. Much, much, much cheaper and you'll be doing them a massive favour. Give the higher end salons in your area a call as well. Most salons only charge for the chemical/product cost. Or if you're anywhere near Hammersmith, give L'Oréal a call or go onto their website.

You'll have to do a patch test for the colour but it's worth it.

The cost will be more than kit and will take a while to have done by the apprentices but, the results and the look will be Mike's better.

Using one of those kits will most likely cost you more money and time when you need to repair your hair or get it corrected.

With darker hair types, ypur run the risk of it being far to warm and needing several toners. Also bleach can be left on for up to 50 mins. Most kits recommend taking it off after 20 to 30 mins. And, if ypu already have an existing colour there, that adds even more complications

Yes I don’t want to end up with orange hair, that happened to me at a high end salon that use ‘gentle alternatives to bleach’ 🤔 it really didn’t suit me

I will enquire about teaching colleges, that’s a good shout 👍🏼

On the subject of HHKs, how long have Wella used this image on their packaging? Must be decades, she looks like she should be in the Human League!

I absolutely would not be doing balayage myself unless I was a hairdresser already. You'll end up with a terrible line where the blend isn't right.

My local post 16 college has a good salon in it, all the stylists are nearly qualified and are monitored by someone well qualified.

JaneJeffer · 02/06/2023 20:35

Don't you want her @RobertaFirmino?

Olia do a highlights for brunettes but I haven't used it so can't say if it's good or bad. Apparently it uses clay Confused

OneMoreCookieMonster · 02/06/2023 21:16

Clay based bleach isn't strong enough. It's ammonia free and very gentle with it's lift!

I know a friend who got another friend to highlight her hair (they did each others) but this was about 10 years ago at least and I can’t recall what kit they used.

Is there a hairdressing school near you?

RobertaFirmino · 02/06/2023 23:19

@JaneJeffer 🤣🤣🤣

I have very dark hair and use Jerome Russell Highlighting Kit which is a 40Vol (Box No1)

Then, blue shampoo in Superdrug own brand for any brassy bits. And purple hair mask for any yellow bits.......Looks very nice and ashy! My skin is cool toned 😊
