Temporarily covering roots before visit to hairdresser

I'm having my roots done on Tuesday but out tonight with friends and my hair looks awful (should have had them done a week ago) but is there anything on the market I could buy to just temporarily colour them? Like a dry shampoo that you spray on?

Lots of stuff that would work - if you can get to Superdrug/Boots there’s lots of different options. You can get dry spray on root cover as well as more liquid products that you paint on.

BG2015 · 02/06/2023 08:46

Oh brilliant. Yes can get to Boots.

I knew the wise women of MN would know. I'm totally clueless.

Clairol do a root touch-up colour that I’ve found really good in the past. It’s permanent colour, not temporary, but it claims to blend with the rest of your colour and it did that quite well for me.

The L'oreal sprays are quite good, come in lots of shades. You just spray it on like spray paint!

However it does dry slowly and leaves a bit of residue that I find comes off on my fingers, so try not to touch your hair much after you've done it. (Which is hard for me, as I find that anything on my head makes it slighlty itchy). Works pretty well though.

BrunchMonster · 02/06/2023 08:53

It's called Magic retouch I think

throwawayaway1 · 02/06/2023 09:45

Color Wow root touch up powder is fantastic.

DarkChocHolic · 02/06/2023 09:48

Following with interest.
Are there any semi permanent root touch ups?
I find it very wasteful to use up a whole pack of semi permanent dye as I mainly use it for the temple area

BG2015 · 02/06/2023 12:49

I got some L'Oréal cover up from Boots. It was £9.99 but they have an offer on for 2 for £14 if anyone needs to stock up.

Looking forward to trying it in a bit once I get home

Depending on how the dye is boxed you can often mix just enough for what you need.

ie mix half the bottle of colour and half the bottle of developer into a separate bowl and apply with a colour brush. Then screw the lids back on the separate bottles and keep the remaining halves for next time.

DarkChocHolic · 02/06/2023 13:48

@YellowHatt
I use the loreal semi permanent box dye
Unfortunately their developer is a pierce through container.

Yes, I used this before and it's really good. However I found a cheaper version on Amazon from a brand called HairGenetics and it works just as well for a fraction of the price.

When I was trying to give me a hair a bit of a break from chemical processing I tried lots of these different products, and my absolute favourite is this one:

Sadly it is by far the most expensive, but the bottle lasts ages, and it gives amazing cover. The only things that's a bit confusing is the name- the 'blondish' shade is perfect for my brunette hair, it would be far too dark if you were actually blonde! The L'Oreal spray mentioned up thread gives great coverage too, but I find it tends to drip a bit when applying so it can be a little messy. The colour wow powder is great too, but when I've got lots of root growth I find it takes quite a while to apply, whereas with the spray is ready in seconds.

Blondish Hair Powder | Bumble and bumble.

This tinted dry shampoo absorbs excess oil, boosts texture, and enhances and refreshes color.

You need to brush the L’Oréal root touch up spray after you’ve sprayed it on, otherwise it goes all tacky and itchy

WhereAreWeNow · 02/06/2023 16:31

Root powder. I use a Clairol one I buy on Amazon. You just brush it on.

PacificState · 02/06/2023 16:45

Word of warning, the L'Oreal Magic Retouch Permanent (not the powder) is, I think, Just For Men or something like that repackaged. It's a permanent dye that works in about 10 minutes and it fucks your hair.

BrunchMonster · 02/06/2023 16:47

the spray one definitely isn't permanent! It comes off in the shower (and on your fingers)

1idea · 02/06/2023 16:47

I use the coloured dry shampoo for brown hair when desperate.

crackfoxy · 02/06/2023 16:51

Once you've used the spray leave it dry then cover with hairspray to stop it transferring onto your hands if you touch your hair

Meeting · 02/06/2023 16:52

A headband?

This is good just makes hair a little itchy so need to wash the day after

BG2015 · 02/06/2023 18:19

I tried it.

The colour I chose was medium to dark blonde but I think my hair is lighter than I thought. It's ok and certainly looks better than the awful grey roots but think I'd buy a lighter shade next time.

Thanks for all your tips, don't know why I've never tried this before.

The l’oreal root touch up is good, however my hairdresser did advise to not use for at least 3 days before having it coloured as the colour may not possibly take as well. Good for in between colours tho for a night out like you asked for advice on.
