Too casual for a wedding?

Itssnotunusual · 31/05/2023 22:51

I've bought this for a wedding in the middle of next month. After looking at other threads im slightly worried it's too casual!

I'm adding what it was going to a pair it with too.

Bearing in mind I'm 23, 5 foot 6 and about a size 8-10. I'm got quite small boobs too!

I agree that the shoes go with the dress. The bag isn't great but I bet you could pick up something in a more 60s style on Depop/charity shop etc. If you can't it's not the end of the world

TangledUpinBlu · 31/05/2023 23:30

Hmm maybe the shoes do match if they are 60s style and they do look comfy which is important.
Im sure at your age and with your lovely figure in that dress nobody will even notice your bag or shoes and you’ll look lovely.
don’t torture yourself trying to find shoes if those ones are comfy and do look good with the dress.
Im certainly no fashion expert by a long way I only ended up here for advice about my own wedding outfit which I will probably ruin with the wrong shoes 😩🙈

Shoes are fine, just the wrong colour! And colours that match the dress would be perfect.

Out of curiosity what colour do you think would suit better? I'm not above buying dye and doing it myself. Bonus points if it's pink as I have a very sad pair of pink doc martens that need a new lease of life (or some leather dye)

I agree, if you are happy with the shoes then wear them. I'm not mad about the bag but if it matches the shoes in real life it would be great! The dress is gorgeous.

Friendofdennis · 31/05/2023 23:32

It’s a lovely dress and the shoes and bag are suitably plain and don’t clash with the dress

SpringNotSprung · 31/05/2023 23:34

Can you dye the shoes one of the dress's main colours. If you do that I think the bag will look better.

Itssnotunusual · 31/05/2023 23:37

That's kind of what I was going for. I don't want to buy statement shoes or a bag that I would never use again! I can work white accessories into my current wardrobe

1960s shoes

Search Mary Quant or Twiggy for the style of shoes. 1960s shoes are flatter than the ones in your picture.

The colour of yours doesn't match or contrast with any of the colours in the dress. The dress is great.

Don't waste money on a new handbag- borrow one or pick something small and bland if you have it or something , small, bland and cheap from a charity shop.

That's definitely an option I'd be willing to take

@NatashaDancing I'm intrigued, the shoes are Mary Jane's and the only difference between them and the ones you posted links to really is that they're rounded toed. Other than that they're very similar really.
Not trying to argue just genuinely there isn't much difference.

Inkypot · 31/05/2023 23:41

@NatashaDancing cross posted sorry!

The heels are too high too clumpy / blocky. The type of shoes you see on photos of Twiggy, Mary Quant, Jean Shrimpton with that style of dress are lower, even flat, and more delicate.

My aunt has an assortment of accessories I can rummage through so she probably has something I can steal. I own approximately one clutch bag and it's massive and black and would absolutely not go with this dress.

I was going to go with flats but thought I'd look a bit inconspicuous at a wedding in them! I have only been to a handful of weddings and this is only my second one as an adult. I might scour the charity shops this weekend

I don't disagree and I really loved the article you linked to about Twiggy and 60s fashion. I love my 60s fashion and make up and it's always my go to look too.
I would say the ones OP has picked for the wedding are ok as a nod to 60s without needing to be a fully devoted 60s look if you see what I mean. They're a sort of 60s inspired style rather than exact replica.
But I agree if she's planning a more genuine 60s look then yes flatter shoes would be more accurate.

I would go with flats - see Twiggy etc. That style of dress was worn with flat pumps or flat Mary Janes.

Definitely look at charity shops or your aunt's wardrobe. Any small bag which picks up any of the colours in the dress will be fine. Even if you hate it, hold it behind your back in the photos and under a chair for the rest of the time.

It really is a lovely dress.

Itssnotunusual · 31/05/2023 23:59

I'm really appreciating the input, I didn't think I'd get much to be honest!

I'm enjoying the education on 60s fashion which I think I have unconsciously emulated more than once in my clothing choices,

I think the problem with the shoes is a flatter, more authentic Mary Jane in that colour would be ok or that shoe in a colour which matched or contrasted with the dress would be ok too, but the style and the colour are both a bit out.

If I were OP I wouldn't worry about the bag- as long as it doesn't actually say "Tesco bag for life" nobody will notice !

I could definitely dye the shoes a blush pink as I need to dye some other shoes a similar colour anyway

The dress is really great. Don't panic about the bag and shoes. It's hard to know if they "go" as different photos can distort the colour slightly. But they are fine. It's a wedding of presumably close friends/family, not a fashion competition.

Westfacing · 01/06/2023 05:48

The dress is lovely and at 23, 5'6" and size 8-10 you too will look lovely, even with a white bag and shoes!

Dyeing the shoes pink is a good idea.

FuckingHateRats · 01/06/2023 06:24

Have you searched for sets on Vinted? This was a revelation to me. Search 'matching shoes bag 5' or whatever size you are. You'll find lots of sets of shoes and clutch bags perfect for weddings, that are designed to match each other.
