Helix piercing

Thinking of getting a helix piercing at an age I should know better !
But I’m concerned about being able to sleep on that side. How long does it take to heal, and what would be the comfiest thing to have put in ?

Always go for a titanium bar for a cartilage piercing and the best place is a proper piercer often at a tattoo parlour.
When I had mine done I couldn't sleep on that side for 4 months which was no fun.

ilsalund · 28/05/2023 17:09

My helix was a bugger to heal - using a travel pillow made sleeping OK.
I think it took 6 months to heal and for the next six months any little knock would set it back again

ilsalund · 28/05/2023 17:10

Forgot to say I had mine done with a ring because of the shape of my ear and I don't think that helped. When I had a forward help done it was with a curved bar and that healed really quickly and was no problem at all

toastfiend · 28/05/2023 17:16

Mine was painful to sleep on/very painful when I knocked it for about 10 days afterwards. After that it was fine but best to avoid sleeping on it whilst it's healing if you can as you do risk irritating it and slowing down the healing process if it's constantly subject to friction against the pillows.

My helix was a titanium clicker hoop, from what I remember. None of my piercings with titanium jewellery have healed very well, though. I had my daith pierced with a solid gold clicker last year and it was the easiest, quickest overall healing process so I'll be going with gold from now on. I am super reactive to stuff, though. Personally I prefer clicker hoops as they seem to get caught less than studs/bars.

I’ve never tried titanium, but I know I can’t wear silver or cheap metal.

I had a double helix in December last year, couldn't sleep on it for a good couple of months and deliberately had it done in the side I don't sleep on. The worst bit was catching it in a towel when I washed my hair and sunglasses weren't great for a while.

Go to a reputable Tattoo/Piercing studio.
They;ll have a range of jewellery that you can choose from but they'll advice you what is best for the site and the shape of your ear.
I have a daith pierced with a hoop and recently got a forward helix stud (on other ear)
It throbs a bit if I knock it or sleep on it (but I instinctively move or fold my pillow)
Both titanium medical grade

What age is "old enough to know better" Grin I'm 56 and onc my ear has settled I'm eyeing up space for another .

I had problems a month ago when I knocked it there was some localised swelling and pus . I used some warm salty water (boiled) on a muslin cloth which drew the pus out and it settled

DD had a cartilage piercing which got caught by the hairdressers comb, she ended up removing it as it didn;t settle

TellKingTutIWantMyMummy · 28/05/2023 22:18

Implant grade titanium by an experienced piercist.

donut pillow to sleep on. Around 12 months to heal, sometimes longer.

Catchasingmewithspiders · 28/05/2023 22:21

Get a monopillow they have been great with all my piercings.

Ive had 5 in my lobes, one in my helix and one in my conch. My helix has taken the longest to heal and is easily caught but after 6 months it's settling down quite nicely now.

TellHimDirectlyInDetail · 28/05/2023 22:22

Mines not healed yet, had it for 8 months. Sooooo anoying.

WhatALump · 28/05/2023 22:29

As others have said my helix took so
long to heal and sleeping on it was painful. My Tragus, rook and daith piercings however healed much quicker and weren’t painful to sleep on

Fumnudge · 28/05/2023 22:34

Mine is healed but I still can't sleep on it. Maybe the angle, maybe I'm fussy. I can just about sleep with a ring in it.
It wouldn't heal with titanium though and I know plenty who have had the same experience, I wonder if they are putting cheaper metals in the production?

Awkwardsauce · 28/05/2023 22:43

I got mine done after lockdown and it healed really well. Usually I toss and turn in my sleep but I managed to sleep on the other side and wake up in the same position for a good month or so initially so no problems there and apart from knocking it a couple of times which stung there were no issues.

As others have said, go to a proper piercing shop, make sure they use a needle instead of a gun and a titanium post. Don't touch it after. I got a bottle of healing solution home with me which helped but it does take around 6 months at least. I changed mine to a ring eventually, or rather the piercer changed it for me. Tempted to get another one, I love it.

powerrangers · 29/05/2023 00:10

Over a year and sometimes it still gives me grief. Changing it hurts. Pain in the arse but looks pretty

had my first helix piercing at 42 and have had more since. i'm a fan of delicate gold titanium or 14ct gold from Astrid and Miyu. i love very scaled down in size items that are not very bold but with crystal stones to catch the light.

just about to buy this one and put it away for myself for Christmas

I've had two helix piercings on the same side within the last year. They took a few months to heal but other than the first month or so, I didn't have any problems sleeping on them. I do heal piercings well though according to my piercer.
The only issue was when they were new and I caught them in my hair.
I agree with the other comments, go to a proper piercer and have titanium bars.

grooveraidiator · 29/10/2023 13:06

oh and definitely get your helix/ cartilage done with a needle at a studio not a gun by someone at Claires or a hair/beauty salon.

I promise it will heal much better!

DustyLee123 · 29/10/2023 14:09

I tried sleeping on a neck pillow with a lobe piercing, ended up with a sore neck. Someone on here suggested cutting a hole in a foam pillow.
Will titanium be ok in an ear that has only previously tolerated gold ?

That mid helix is exactly what I want doing.
