How do I make my thickish straight hair wavy?

Currently I use heated rollers on my shoulder length hair which gives me the wavy look I want. But even with the application of plenty of hairspray it's straight after a couple of hours.

Salt spray seems to roughen up the texture and looks good after use of heated rollers, but waves are also gone after a couple of hours.

How do I create long lasting waves?

Do you put anything in before you curl? If you hair is thick I'd go for an old fashioned mousse to get it to hold!

I sometimes put mousse on before I dry it, then use heated rollers. Not sure the mousse helps with the hold 🤔

If your hair is 💯 straight it may not have the capacity to hold a wave.

A lot of people who say they have straight hair, don't. It may be mostly straight but to get it poker straight they have to blow-dry/straighten it. Lots of people have true curly or wavy hair and not a clue about it because they brush it when dry. All they see is frizz and get the straighteners out.

Try a strong hold gel after plenty of mousse, a grapefruit sized palmful of it. You can scrunch out the crunch when dry.

When you're using heat tools are you finishing with a blast of cold air? That's needed to stop curls dropping.

If heated products don't work you can try plaiting. In the morning, wash or dampen hair, apply products, comb through, then plait. Sleep in it overnight and take it out the next day when dry. You could do one long one at the base of your neck, one or two French plaits, or lots of small plaits all over your head (this is less comfortable to sleep on and would have to be done just before bed due to being unflattering)

IndianSummer78 when I use mousse it's just a tablespoonful, certainly not grapefruit size so that's something for me to try.

And when I take out the heated rollers I leave my hair to cool before combing through with my fingers. I'll try the blast of cold air.

My hair is not poker straight so maybe there's hope for it wavewise.

Is there a strong hold gel you can recommend?
