How long for my thinned out hair to thicken up?! Hair cut mistake!

Hi all, I’ve got very fine hair. I got a curtain bangs fringe cut in a couple of months ago. I mistakenly thought getting it thinned would make it lovely and wispy like photos I’ve seen.

However with my hair being so thin it now just looks terrible. I can’t get the hair to stay together and instead it just separates out into horrid lines that don’t look good, in fact it makes my hair look greasy when I’ve just washed it.

What can I do?! My hairdresser said it’d probably take another 2-3 haircuts for it to thicken out again, which I’m taking to mean about 3 months?? God. I’m needing to book another appointment to get it the fringe trimmed anyway as it’s getting too long, but my usual hairdresser have no appointments for 8 weeks so that’s me having to find another trustworthy hairdresser and explain it to them.

I should also add the first girl who thinned my fringe was fairly newly qualified so maybe she didn’t realise it wasn’t the best idea..

That was a bit of a rant.. sorry! Just fed up with it. I’ve even tried using vast amounts of dry shampoo but that doesn’t fix it either 😢

Can we see a picture please.

I bet it's not as bad as you feel it is. You will focus on the bits your note pleased with whereas people will be looking at your face etc

See photos of horrible freshly washed fringe.
It looks like this regardless of what shampoo I use or how I style it 😓

Tuck it behind your ears with a centre parting? Is that what you had before? I curl my thin curtain fringe with tongs so it swoops away from my face (when i can be bothered).

WombatCowgirl · 28/05/2023 20:21

Plus I use John Frieda volumising shsmpoo and conditioner and elnett mousse, makes a real difference!

TellHimDirectlyInDetail · 28/05/2023 21:54

Well it looks too long to go straight down. Have you tried parting it and brushing it back but with a curve?

Different cause in my case , I;m menopausal and last year through illness I lost loads of my hair , it came out if I ran my fingers through my hair and every time I washed it , the plughole was blocked with hair .
To add insult , my hair was fuzzy like cotton wool and stuck out like Ken Dodds hair (I know , I;m a catch , yeah )

I bought some The Hair Doctor supplements and Phillip Kingsley Elasticiser
Had some of the length cut so it wasn;t putting any weight on my fragile scalp and given time , I have regained probably 80% of my hair (grey but you cannot have everything ) and minimal loss .
I bought a Dyson hairdryer as it has a cool setting (though my DD uses it more than I do)

With your hair sweep it back maybe . If you can with a light curl .
You don't wear it over your eyes do you , that would drive me mad !

cheesywotsit62 · 28/05/2023 22:37

@TellHimDirectlyInDetail Oh yes I usually do that! It was just today I didn’t style it at all as I was just nipping out briefly and looking at it like that got me so down and frustrated!

I have also lightly curled it then brushed it through before, if it has a slight wave to it it doesn’t look so bad. It’s just that completely unstyled it’s horrible!

You have a strong hairline from what I can see. No haircut ever looks great when it's not styled. We can cut it but not style it for you once you are home. Personally I'd use a volumising mousse after washing and dry using a large round brush then style with straighteners to straighten or wave, then use a light hairspray to keep the style.

Bargellobitch · 29/05/2023 07:45

I've got fine hair and I'm absolutely baffled anyone would do this tbh. What was the hairdresser thinking even of newly qualified? I'm also not sure on your logic but you have you live with itso I don't want to be mean!

How long is it? Is it just the fringe that's the issue? Your pic is of it over your forehead and spread out. But that's not how you'd style a curtain fringe so how does it look when styled like in a parting? Hard to advise without knowing this...

What about a hairband or wearing hair half up in a high bun which included the fringe? I have curtain fringe and I can tie my fringe up in my bun if it's on top of my head.

PissPotPourri · 29/05/2023 07:47

You should be able to pop in to your hairdresser at any point for a quick fringe trim anyway- you really don’t need to book a full appointment just for that

SprinkleRainbow · 29/05/2023 08:35

I have really thin hair, since my last baby 2 years ago its got even thinner and I can't do anything about it.
Wearing your hair up loosely in a bun can help make it look thicker, but I can't really offer any advice but I feel your pain!
I have very light hair as well which makes it look even worse 🤣
I take Biotin, use all the right shampoos and you can still see my scalp through my hair 👎
