Sewing pattern similar to this Anthropologie dress

Hello

Went shopping with DH today. I tried on a patterned tiered shirt dress in Zara. I liked it but struggled to bring myself to spend £50 on something made of such thin, cheap fabric.

I've since found a similar dress on Anthropologie and my Mum has offered to help me sew one. But I don't know where to start to look for a pattern. Hobby Craft seem to stock lots but the photos are shocking. I need to have a proper look on John Lewis.

Please help

My Mum is an experienced seamstress fortunately, she could make adaptations to a pattern whereas I would struggle to sew a tote bag!

That 2nd dress is really similar thank you. It has the benefit of the strappy version too which is really nice. It's out of stock atm but I'll keep an eye out.

Tilly and the buttons patterns have great instructions & videos for when you get stuck.

I haven't made a homemade dress for less than £60 and don't have great fit or finish either! But it is satisfying.

I also thought about Lyra! It’s not too slim-fitting, especially if you maybe size up one from your measurements. It’s also easy and very wearable

By the time you buy the thread, fabric, pattern and buttons it is cheaper to buy the £50 dress

That depends on whether you find bargain fabric and whether you use the pattern again. If a pattern becomes a favourite you can get multiple uses out of it. I could make a darn good dress for £50 but I know where to get the kind of fabrics I like for a good price. (Eg I had some linen from an EBay seller that was £6 a metre and I used less than 2m to make a pair of wide leg trousers which were so perfect I made 2 more versions from the same pattern. So total cost under £20…)

Style Arc and Fibremood both have very sparse instructions!

Anything I would suggest has mostly already been suggested but the dress you like is only out of stock at the foldine. Its available in other places including as a PDF directly from the pauline alice website.

If you don't fancy printing it out and sticking it together yourself then CLC Essex will print it for you for about £5.

Dig out that Tilly and the Buttons book (if you create an account on her website you can download and print all the patterns separately using your book's ISBN number) and get learning and come and join us over on the Mumsnet Stitch and Bitch Threads.

There's a few of us there from absolute beginners to quite experienced sewists.

Its in stock at Minerva. I'm also very tempted by this (well for dh to make for me as he's the expert sewer in this house 😁)
