Washing Trainers

Hi. I have some very old but comfortable trainers that need a wash.

I don't know if it's worth putting them in the washing machine. I'm thinking it may be unhygienic if I'm washing tea towels in the next wash.

Has anyone washed trainers in the washing machine? Any advice? Thanks

Yep, I washed 3 pairs in with a huge towel this week and left them n the sun to dry. No issues. I wouldn't put leather ones in though. DH ruined a lovely pair doing that.

I always wash trainers . I undo the laces to the bottom hole, so that they stay in, and pull the tongue out. Spray with Vanish and Chuck them in, then air dry them.

All the time, I wash them with towels

I wash trainers, look at the instructions for your machine, they usually have a sports shoe setting.
I soak mine in a bowl of soapy water then spray with vanish then into the machine, I dry them outside

I always wash mine in the washing machine - usually do when I wash my white towels (white trainers) or coloureds (with black trainers) Never had a problem (touch wood). I take my laces out and bleach (the white laces) separately. Coloured laces I keep in the trainers. After, I pack mine with either tea towels or microfibre clothes and then air dry.

As this is S&B I presume they are fashion trainers, or at least ones you're not doing sport in.
If so then it's fine to bung them in the machine. It's not advisable to our sport shoes in the wash as it can damage the cushioning etc

Yes, I put my indoor (gym) trainers in on a low setting like wool or delicates. On their own and I don't worry about what goes in after them. My outdoor (netball/running) trainers also go in, but I'll only wash hoodies or jeans after them, I'm not comfortable washing pillow cases or tea towels after them. I read somewhere that there will always be dog faeces on outdoor footwear, and I'm the type of person that shouldn't read things like that .

Any advice on washing trainers that have a suede panel as well as canvas and leather? I wash my running shoes all the time but I want to wash some white ones I have that have suede on the sides.

WithIcePlease · 25/05/2023 09:02

I wash suede ones too. Fully suede ones come out a bit stiff but that wore off with wearing them. It was either that or binning them. I wash ones with small areas of suede no problem.
Wash with towels. Put the spin down too - I use 600 - as I have had banana soles from 1200.

I have washed trainers in the machine but saw a clip on social media of someone using a power washer on their trainers and worked like a charm.

Hubster has an old pair of Sebago sand coloured, nubuck trainers, which were an expensive buy some years ago. They've been machine washed in the past and needed cleaning again. We were not sure the inside of the shoe would take another washing, so we cleaned them up using 'Pink Stuff', having nothing to lose due to their age, and it worked. Not saying it will work for all trainers, or marks, but we were surprised at the results!

My main concern would be drying them
quickly after washing so they don’t stink. So I’d wait for a really hot day. Quick 30 degree wash then hang them on the line
