Going grey- to dye or not to dye?

everythingisgoingup · 23/05/2023 14:38

As the title says, going grey around temples and I am thinking of using a hair dye.

Cannot afford hairdresser prices, so would need to be reasonable price!

Any recommendations? 😊

I just use a box dye - Garnier nutrisse or just embrace it if you want to.

everythingisgoingup · 24/05/2023 15:52

Thanks Frosty1000 daughter says to embrace it!

I am not so sure.

How often do you use it?

If you can afford the hairdressers every 8 weeks, your hair would look lovely. But I personally believe that healthy grey hair looks better than box dyed hair.

everythingisgoingup · 24/05/2023 15:56

Thanks longlivegoblingking I cannot justify the cost at the hairdresser and fear it is a slippery slope once I start ☹️

I really regret starting to dye my greys (started a long time ago). I do my own with box dye and now it's become a terrible chore keeping on top of my roots (I suspect I'm nearly all grey now).

I would love to stop but can't face the process of growing it out. I'd say embrace the grey.

Rolloisthebestpony · 24/05/2023 16:01

How old are you?
I feel nowhere near old enough to be grey at 40. It’s personal though isn’t it.

my friend went grey and it made her feel really rubbish so she returned to blonde and it’s like her old self is back again

Squiblet · 24/05/2023 16:02

I love my box dyed hair - been dyeing it since the first greys at 25, never looked back. There was a woman I used to see around the neighbourhood who must have been in her 80s but still had dark brown hair. She looked great!

If you go for it, OP, try to choose one that's ammonia free. It will be easier on your hair and scalp. Flowerology (from Ocado) and Nutritint (Amazon) are good.

Dye.

MN loves grey so I know this will be unpopular but...ot's ageing. It just is. A friend of mine just went from blonde to grey and she put on 10 years. She's gone back to blonde. Keanu Reeves girlfriend was feted for being age appropriate and having grey hair. She looked like his mother - notice Keanu isn't grey! Just don't do it.

Argh! This is the problem the difference of opinion 😆

I am fifty, if that is relevant? 😉

I’m 42 and grey! Spent years dying my hair. It suits me so much better now, is in much better condition, and it’s so liberating not always trying to cover up the white stripe. I know plenty of people don’t like it, and it might make me look older than before. But it’s my hair and I love it!

Haywirecity · 24/05/2023 17:25

Yes, because the older you are, the older you look. I once saw a woman who looked fab grey. But she was in her late 20s.

If people want to go grey, then that's up to them. I'd never tell a woman it made them look older. And if it's more practical for them and they're happy, that's great - it's a sensible decision. I hold no evil in my heart for grey-haired women. 😄 But if someone were to ask me for advice, I'd always say dye it.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 24/05/2023 17:42

If it is just around the temples you can use Nice and Easy Root Touch up. This way you are just dying the greys around your temples to blend in with your own colour and not the full head. It is really easy to use. I'm not ready to go full grey yet, anyone I know who has done it just seems to have aged instantly.

Alltheusernamesaretakennow · 24/05/2023 17:47

Gave up dyeing and it is so freeing - I guess it depends on your colouring etc... I prefer to call my hair silver !

MotherofPearl · 24/05/2023 17:48

Google pictures of Queen Letizia of Spain, who is in her early 50s and allowing herself to go grey - she has lovely silvery streaks running through her hair and looks amazing imo. I really don't think it needs to be ageing.

GreyHairdontcare1982 · 24/05/2023 17:53

Ok so I tend to post on these threads periodically to extol the virtues of going grey. I started to go grey at 19, dyed my hair for the best part of 20 years before I got completely sick of it and decided to give up the dye completely shortly before my 37th birthday.

Honestly, I accept that some people might say I look older than my years (40 now) but getting my hair done and then less than a week later hating looking at myself in the mirror because of the grey roots already coming through was starting to really really get me down.

And I don’t think it looks so bad, I think artificially dark or block colour hair with white roots can look so much worse.

I don't think it's just as simple as 'going grey' or 'covering it' up IME.

My hair is naturally dark and gone increasingly grey since my 20s. I'm in my 40s now. My hair grows in white around the temples and darker on top. It looks awful grown out. If it was all just white, I could cope with it. But it's not and I don't like the whole salt and pepper thing. If I colour it, the dye is really light on the lighter greys and dark on the dark hair.

I've been trying to find a solution for about five years. My opinions are pretty much highlights at the hairdressers that I can't afford. Or bleaching it myself at home. Which is not good for my hair. But I do it anyway and then put a semi permanent over the top. My hair is currently pink.

Makkapakkasstones · 24/05/2023 18:54

@GreyHairdontcare1982 your hair is fabulous. My DM hair is similar colour to yours and I'd love mine to grow in like this. Unfortunately mine is still really dark on top.

tillyandmilly · 24/05/2023 18:58

I am 54 - I have only used Naturtint hair dye ammonia free - £10 per box - had hair dyed once at salon - never again cannot sit still that long! I hate the texture of grey hair as they stick up and are curly! I dye my hair every 6 weeks
