Serious inspiration needed. I don't really do 'smart' and i'm not sure where to start, just sure that I will freeze.
Size 12, 5' 8. Anyone got any ideas to point me in the direction of?

Gosh - not sure what you wear for daytime black tie - where's MrsBadger - she'll know...

In the meantime, what sort of shape are you? Norks, or not, good legs, arms, waist. And what sort of budget?

I'm hopeless at this stuff!
Limited norks, no waist to speak of, legs are ok. budget really depends if I can adapt to other occasions, in the summer have a ball to go to and a wedding in Madrid so if I can make something fit all occasions I don't mind spending however if not I will still need more outfits so the budget diminishes! Thanks for replying I thought it must be a no hoper yesterday

You're a fab shape for clothes - tall and 'unlumpy' - I believe you can wear most styles. Lucky you!
Not sure about black tie in the day - between you and I, I'm not sure that's quite 'correct'!! However, black tie in the day it is, and I would say that means a frock (as opposed to separates). You need to make sure your shoulders are demurely covered for church (a pashmina will keep you warm too), and I would definitely wear a hat - or fascinator, at least (horrible word).

I think you should be able to find something for all three. You could hire a hat, although if you get the right style, it might come in handy for the Madrid wedding.

Trinny and Susannah say you should wear floaty chiffon to soften your shape. But maybe that's not your style. But I think they're right in the 'feminine' message - because you're quite tall and not very hourglass, bias cut dresses will be more floaty and girly. But they don't have to be chiffon - how about silk (good for different temperatures ie, Ireland and Spain, because it breathes.)
V-necks make the most of limited norks (as we're calling them!!)
I also agree with T&S that you don't want fiddly jewellery. Go for a 'statement' necklace and a 'wow' bag and hat.
If you use them to dress up a fairly classic dress, you'll find it easier to change the look of the dress and wear it to different occasions.
Go to your local small boutique and ask for help! Otherwise, how about Whistles, Monsoon or Coast? Hope this helps!
