Menopausal Hair!

My hair has gone slightly crazy over the last year or so. It’s currently below shoulder length and coloured (balayage), probably every 6-8 months so not over bleached or anything. Washed three times a week, dried with hair dryer, don’t use straightners. It’s gone from fairly fine and straight to frizzy, loads of broken hair, especially short ones on top if that makes sense, greys left right and centre but I guess that’s mother nature. Actually, I wonder whether the ‘broken’ hairs are new growth? There are loads around my hairline too and I just don’t abuse my hair to damage it so much. Anyway, maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree blaming it on menopause but that’s all I can think of!

Any shampoo/conditioner recommendations please? I’m using Olaplex 4 and 5 but only once a week at the moment because I really couldn’t see any benefit when I used it each wash, other days using Ogx coconut milk. I do love the Olaplex shampoo, it just feels so rich and luxurious and am undecided whether to re-purchase it along with one of their other conditioning treatments - are they more effective than the daily conditioner? Or is there another (cheaper would be nice) brand worth trying that will settle the frizz and make the shorter hairs less noticeable?

Thanks!

I'm 51 and my hair is awful now. A halo of wild, wiry, grey, uncontrollable hairs have literally appeared in the last year, along with significant thinning. I've always had fine, straight, silky hair but I now just look like a crazy old woman. I think its regrowth rather than snapping but I just despair now. I just try and stick it down with hair spray or literally any cream, including hand cream.

You'll get lots of product recommendations but for me, redken and pureology are far better than Olaplex.

@Ohfgsjon your description of a halo of wild, wild, grey, uncontrollable hairs is just perfect and much more succint than my ramblings!

I shall have a look at Pureology and Redken - are there specifc ranges?

Same here! My hair has gone very coarse and frizzy, I get it cut every six weeks and coloured 3 times a year. I hate having crazy hair!

I've never used a rubbish Pureology and redken extreme or acidic bonding. Amla oil is awesome but messy and smells hideous and the smell lingers. I've also just toned it with a clairol blonde me toner and it has been like silk since, altho that might not be a solution for everyone! Hairpray on a toothbrush to tame the halo works as well.

BrandNewBicep · 22/05/2023 13:22

My hair is exactly the same. Would recommend the Redken Extreme range, in particular the Anti Snap Treatment.

Totally recommend urban antidotes by tigi. I've used both the resurrection and recovery versions and both are lovely.

Also I did do a once a week deep treatment by osmo (on Amazon).

My hair has returned to the glossy soft hair I used to have.

My hair has improved 100% since starting collagen and chlorophyll supplements. I think you need to sort things out internally rather than external products (I tried so many and none really worked for me!)

Pure solid organic coconut oil in glass jar (Tesco do it for £5/6 in the oil aisle)

It's not exactly easy to use, you have to scrape some out and warm it in your hands and just get it into your hair however and as best you can but it 'mends' hair amazingly. After putting it on I bung a shower cap over my head and wear a towel round my shoulders to catch any drips and just watch TV or read or go to bed. Leave it at least a couple of hours or overnight (sleep on a thick towel).

When you wash it out use a couple of shampoos and then whatever conditioner you usually use. Your mid length and ends will be all silky again.

IMO it works better than Olaplex or Philip Kingsley Elasticiser or even the Kerastese hair masks.

Oh and be careful in hot weather the whole jar melts into oil. So don't forget and throw it all over the carpet when you take the lid off like i did! 🙄😂

Ah that’s great to get so many suggestions! I’d best do a bit more googling but will definitely start with something suggested and work my way through them until I find the answer!

@Luana1 I did try Collagen a while ago but really saw no benefit so stopped. I actually just chucked the remainder in the bin just a few days ago. I had high hopes … maybe I didn’t give it long enough!

@Laiste … your last paragraph 🤦‍♀️. Sounds just like something I’d do!

Thanks all!
