Going from 13st to 12st at 5'6" - enough to drop a dress size?

I'm a pear shaped 5'6" and have recently lost 1 stone. Just wondering if you would expect that to translate to a drop in one dress size?

Yes probably but it does depend where you carry your weight and what body shape you are.

elevenplusdilemma · 21/05/2023 13:11

I'm the same height and went from 11st to 10st and didn't quite move down a dress size. I would probably need to lose another 1/2 stone to comfortably fit into the next size down.
I suppose it depends how tight the current size you're wearing is. I was wearing a 12 before losing weight. Although not bursting out of the seams, there wasn't a lot of room for growth either. With a stone lost - a 12 was quite a loose fit and although I could get into a size 10, it felt a bit too tight to be comfortable.

This is my theory regarding dropping a size. It is said that 10 pounds = a dress size.
Many of us wear a size until we are at the bigger end of the size. Eg I was a size 10 and I continued wearing it until the buttons left red marks on my skin. I then moved to a size 12. Unfortunately I am now firmly a size 12. In order to go back to size 10, I’d need to lose 10 pounds and then some more so probably more like 17 - 21 pounds.

I’ve never found 1 stone = a dress size to be true for me.

I have fluctuated from a comfortable UK18 at 16 stone to a comfortable UK12 at 10 stone. I’m 5’6”.

I think at both 12 and 13 stone I was still a UK14/16.

Mumof1andacat · 21/05/2023 18:27

For me, to drop a dress size in need to loose 1.5 stone. Everyone will be different

lechatnoir · 21/05/2023 18:39

Also 5ft6 and a dress size is more like 1.5stone for me.
I've gone from
12.10 to 11.11 so nearly a stone and definitely noticed my stomach is flatter, double chin less obvious and jeans not so tight but still a most definite 14. I have a whole wardrobe of fairly fitted/tailored size 10-12 clothes I'm a long way off yet! Target is somewhere just above 10stone as that was where I was pre-covid and always used to be sustainable and was happy being a curvy 10-12.

cherrypied · 21/05/2023 19:24

Possible as pp said depends if you were at the larger end of a dress size

At 13 stone I'd be a true size 16 and at a 12st I'd be a true size 14.

By true size I mean go into anyt store sand any jeans / dress/ trousers would fit rather than the elasticated oversize versions!

Laiste · 21/05/2023 21:59

I'm 5'5 hourglass busty and for me 1 stone is a dress size.

I've lost 4 stone twice in my life and both times i was pleasantly surprised how quickly the dress sizes click down.

But as pp say, it depends how tight your clothes are when you start and where you're buying your new ones. Some brands come up tiny!

Bargellobitch · 21/05/2023 22:20

I'm a similar height and I think it's more 1.5 stones for me for a dress size. I also think it really depends on weight distribution and amount of weight lost, lose skin etc can alter this too.

NightsonBroadway · 21/05/2023 23:36

Thanks all. It turns out while I was able to do up the zip, which is progress, there’s no way I could wear it as it was so tight. So yes I think the answer will be 1.5 stones or thereabouts for a dress size! Interesting discussion!

I am gradually losing weight since mid March and so far have lost 15lb, so just over a stone and went down a dress size by the time I had lost 10lb. I am working out and weight training and I think that makes a very significant difference where the scale is not so relevant. If you are building muscle and losing fat the scale might not move a great deal but your body is getting firmer and tighter causing you to shrink down inches all over. So for best results if you want to move down dress sizes do plenty of weight training while changing the foods and amount you are eating.
