Hi! I need a smelly candle as a gift What's in? I've seen one that smells like a crossiant and then there's diptyque but I need to know what is a suitable posh gifting candle!

IKEA are selling candles that smell like bbq smoke. I wouldn't recommend.

Scents are such a personal and subjective thing, it's a high risk gift.

I cousk tell you which scents I like, but the recipient may have entirely different taste.

If it HAS To be a candle, but you don't know what the recipient likes: I'd avoid citrus or pine scents (can be too cleaning producty), or musk scents (many people don't like them), and any heavy scents (tobacco, leather, cognac), or any linen/washing scents (headache central for some), ditto the gourmands (vanilla, chocolate, food smells).

I'd go for a fig/figure scent - as its green and fresh, and not overly challenging. Dyptique have a fig scent.

Or a while flowers scent. The White company have one called Flowers.

NewAnon · 21/05/2023 10:35

Candle brands I rate are:

Neom
Dyptique (not as much 'throw' as many, but pleasant).
Jo Malone
Cire Trudon
Earl of East (Greenhouse is pleasant and u challenging)

Though Cire Trudon is both pricy, and the scents can be a bit challenging (wet moss, for instance).

Absolutely not, under any circumstances, Yankie candles.

Diptyque is a great suggestion.

I also like Stoneglow's scents

and WoodWick where the wick makes a lovely firewood crackling noise as the candle burns

Diptyque are beautiful and can easily be exchanged if the scent isn’t to the taste of the recipient.

Jo Loves are also beautiful. Smaller ‘library’ but tend to be lighter, fresher and more floral in style. Also can be exchanged. It’s the line now created by Jo Malone since she sold her original brand.

Agree - absolutely not Yankee or Woodwick!

Snugaromatics do the most gorgeous candles. Embrace is my favourite.

Diptique are wonderful, the absolute best.

Chase and Wonder ones come in beautiful pots and smell lovely too.

marshmallowmatcha · 21/05/2023 10:46

Thank you! Budget is about £50-£70.

It's for my sister so I have a fair idea what sort of scents she likes. So sweet gourmand I think you call it. And floral. She usually buys Yankee but I know she's really into candles so I want to get her a "grown up" fancy one.

Oh and she likes branded stuff but I'm not on tick tok or Instagram so can't see whats "cool". I'm thinking Diptyque or maybe white company? Something she can use the jar afterwards with. Are they fashionable?

Haha she likes a Yankee but I think she'd love an upgrade. Earl of East looks cute - probably something I'd like.

I like the sound of the Fig Diptique one but again probably more for me.

Hmm perhaps the Diptyque vanilla one. Has anyone tried this? Is it a sweet vanilla (like a cake) or a smokey vanillia.

Lily Flame candles smell amazing (and the scent lasts). I've had loads of different ones and they all smell lovely!

Diptyque is lovely for this price range. You can definitely keep the jar afterwards. The craftsmanship is great and the scents are top quality. They look great on table tops and dressing tables. It would deffo be appreciated. I believe it is shipped directly from France, so get your order in ahead of time!

MuddaUdders · 21/05/2023 11:19

They also let you select samples at the online checkout and they arrive in a little pouch, all beautifully wrapped x

Ohfgsjon · 21/05/2023 11:20

For presents, you go Neom, White Company or Diptyque. I love Sand n Fog but they don't have as much impact as a present.

marshmallowmatcha · 21/05/2023 11:41

Thank you all - Diptique it is!

Dryad candles from argyll are aamazing. I'm loath to tell people about them because they are a small supplier and I've never found anything quire like them.

PinkArt · 22/05/2023 01:11

If she likes sweet gourmand scents, the Overose Croissant looks a great choice to me. It's on my list once I've worked though my collection a bit as the reviews are great.
Diptyque Vanille is beautiful. Definitely a grown up smoky vanilla rather than a remotely Yankee smell. Possibly my favourite of theirs.
Brandwise, Diptyque is quite classic cool, Overose more whatever trendy people say for trendy cool!

It’s sad no one suggested all natural bees wax. Sourced locally from the bee keeping community.
