Help me with curly straight hair - photos included

All my life, I've been fighting with a hairdryer to try and straighten my hair. It looks nice and smooth when I'm done, unless the wind blows, or it's slightly damp, in which case it becomes extremely frizzy at the sides and curly underneath, particularly at the face of my neck.
Of recent years, it has become apparent that many curly haired people are trying to be straight head and should go with the flow. However, the room I have is that the back of my head goes perfectly, but the front is terrible! I cannot seem to help that part to curly. It's like I've got two people's heads of hair, and the front is straight and the back is curly!

My question is… How do I get the side parts to merge naturally with the rest? If I tried to scrunch it with hair products, it looks like a terrible tight, perm perm, and if I leave it to itself, it looks like I have straightened it and forgotten to straighten the rest, i.e., it looks completely mismatched and to be quite frank messy, as though I haven't bothered.

What do I need to do? As you can tell, I'm not brilliant with hair!

Your hair looks ok to me. It doesn’t look mismatched. If you want a curl in the front try plaiting it when it’s just been washed. Or tying ribbons in it when wet.

CharlotteRumpling · 21/05/2023 08:59

My hair is exactly like this except my waves arent so defined. To be honest, I love your hair. I don't think you should do anything!
Sorry not helpful.

Bitingspaniel · 21/05/2023 08:59

I think it looks nice!

Side partings help curly hair look more curly - have you tried just flipping the front bit so it goes one way or the other?

Thighdentitycrisis · 21/05/2023 09:09

Is it all one length?
The front has a different curl pattern (looser) and it’s always thinner at the front

the shorter hair will probably spring up more, maybe try a style with a fringe or shorter sections at front?

Badatmostthings · 21/05/2023 09:09

How you apply your products will make a difference. Have you tried brushing your product through wet hair at the sides at 90 degree angle from your head? It works like pulling ribbon through scissors. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing the technique. Careful, this is a rabbit hole you could lose a lot of time to 😁

YukoandHiro · 21/05/2023 09:17

What products are you using?

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/05/2023 09:28

Have you tried twisting it round your fingers? I would add product, twist, lightly scrunch twists, leave it to dry and then run fingers gently through.

This.

I think if you just use some sort of curl crème through your hair when it’s damp and scrunch it it would add definition. My favourite is imbue curl hydrating creme in the pot. But my hair is very curly!

dinmin · 21/05/2023 09:36

Curly specialist hairdresser! They cut it differently so it sits right plus will show you how to style.

That's what I do too.
Then once dry I shake it out a bit and I end up with lots of ringlets.
Mine is dry and tight curls. But it has become softer, smoother and the curls looser once I stopped using shampoo The hairdresser only uses shampoo on mine once she colours it. So it's every 6 weeks or so.
Garnier hair food is good, I put it on wet hair do the twist thing, If it's gone dry and frizzy by bedtime due to wind usually, I put the hair food on again and sleep on it. Fantasia frizz buster is good too, only a tiny bit on the ends keeps the curl in shape.

thevery · 21/05/2023 09:43

Mine is similar to yours- curly at the back and underneath but straighter at the front.

I went to a hairdresser who specialised in curly hair. She said there was enough curl in the front to get it to blend with the curls in the back, if she cut it in a way that encouraged the curls. As she was cutting it, it seemed to literally be getting curlier before my eyes- it was honestly like some sort of curly hair witchcraft. She then told me to twist it, add curl cream, and diffuse it. The Difference is amazing.

Love your hair, but if you want to embrace your natural curls, a good layer cut by an experienced hairdresser. I really like at the moment John Frieda , these 2 products, curl creme first on just washed wet hair finger run through and then the mousse after, scrunched in. Leave to air dry.

Best to use Silicone free, specifically formulated shampoo and conditioner for curly hair. Good luck!

With the texture of your curls I would loosely plait the fronts with product. Only when damp, not wet, in multiple sections directing the plait away from the face.

It will give it a very beachy laid back wave

Iwrotethissong · 21/05/2023 09:54

I have very similar hair, curly underneath and straighter on top. The problem is I've been going to hairdressers who don't understand my hair.....for 41 years! Get yourself to a hairdresser with curly hair herself, get a good cut.
Mine advised that I use a curl enhancer, but I personally find OGX airdry cream works well. I finger curl the straight bits, apply product and let it dry. On the days I don't wash my hair I wet it in the showr and apply a dab of product again.
Honestly, finding the right hairdresser 6 months ago has changed my life.

shysquirrel · 21/05/2023 10:12

Merwave. I've similar hair and curly products are just too heavy for it. Gave Merwave a try and it's absolutely transformed my hair. Soft, defined waves for the first time in forty years, no frizz.

Hairybaker · 21/05/2023 10:34

Sorry for hijacking but any curly hairdresser recommendations around the Milton Keynes, Bedford/Northampton area would be amazing!

Tempone · 21/05/2023 10:37

I have poker straight boring hair, I am wildly jealous of your hair, it's fab op!

lookingforMolly · 21/05/2023 10:38

I love your hair, mine is similar but a lot finer especially at the front so following with interest!

PrinceHaz · 21/05/2023 10:40

You have nice curly hair that doesn’t look at all fuzzy.

Laptp · 21/05/2023 10:41

Tbh you hair isn't what I would call curly but 'wavy' and looks like normal wave hair to me. Look up 'wavy girl method' on Google. Lots of products for curly hair can actually be too heavy or even damaging for wavy hair. Try light products like a mousse for curly hair (Boots stocks this). Also try plaiting hair at night if you want to help with definition and lower frizz. Use a microfibre towel to pat hair dry after washing.

Lucy377 · 21/05/2023 10:45

I have hair like this. I use the Big Hair hot brush after drying with the ordinary dryer.

Blomonje · 21/05/2023 10:58

Imo scrunching is the worst thing you can do. Also avoid products that look crispy. Both will give you that awful 80s perm look.

Choose a soft hold product (I like Umberto Giannini curl cream, which is cruelty free). Don’t use too much. Lift the hair at the roots with your fingers, use a hairdryer with a diffuser and let the warm air rise through your hair and curl it naturally.

A haircut with shorter layers at the front and longer layers at the back helps too, as shorter layers curl more.

QueueEtwo · 21/05/2023 11:29

I absolutely love your hair!

IamSallyBowles · 21/05/2023 18:14

you hair is the same as mine - fine and can't make up its mind if it is curly or straight.

I bought OUAI shampoo & conditioner on the strength of a receommnedation on here.

I fond curly girl too harsh for my fine hair that goes greasy after a day - curly girl is too heavy and I hate the way it looks when just co-washed.

I used the OUAI stuff (got it on special offer and unfortunately is very expensive) and my curls work properly - all over my head and I no longer need to wash my hair every day.

Also - never brush your hair other than when it is sopping wet and never use a towel (and if you have no alternative don't rub, just wrap your hair). I tend to wrap up in a t-shirt or microfibre towel and leave until it is damp, then just air dry it.

Products that go crispy are meant to for hold but you scrunch them out then
My hair is rock solid when I use products and dry it but then scrunch out the crunch and get lovely soft hair!
We just didn't realise that in the 80s Grin
