What would you wear?

I need advice
I'm 42, dumpy and normally really dress down as I wfh and no one cares what I look like. My Dh is having a birthday and we've invited people to an afternoon in a function hall as our house isn't suitable if it rains.
I want to look nice but not overdressed, do I wear a day dress (long or short) or trousers and top? Also it's impossible to guess the weather for a weeks time. I want to support my dh and make it nice for him as loads of people keep dropping out. :-(

That's lovely but not my style, I'm normally in too big jeans and Hoodies so feel I need to up my game. I like the idea of a tea dress, most of mine are either evening dresses or summer dresses but I guess it doesn't need to be smart, just nicer than old jeans :-)

Stick with what makes you comfy but up it several levels. So if you're comfy in trousers and a top, look at more dressed up versions of those. If you fancy a dress for a change, go for it, but in my experience I'll end up back in what I normally wear. A dress might languish in the wardrobe, but I'd definitely wear the top trousers again even if they're "up" a level on normal just because they feel comfy.

I’m a similar age and currently love wearing flares and a nice top on occasions like this and meals out. Do you have any comfortable wedges to make you feel taller if you feel you look dumpy?

I'm dumpy and feel better in a dress than trousers. I'd probably go for a shirt dress with a belt, or a print midi dress (tends to be more like maxi on me) with sandals + cute toenail varnish. Have a look at Dorothy Perkins online (but quality can be hit and miss), TU, George/Asda, Matalan?

This looks nice, not exciting though, wearable for work, if I had it.

Thank you
I think my options are

  1. clear out my wardrobe to find my pre pandemic clothes and see if I can find something suitable that still fits
  2. I've got a couple of hours on Sunday to run round the shops if I hate everything I own

I'm thinking summer dress with nice summer flats, even if it's raining as least I'll look summery.
