How to dress in late thirties?

MovieQueen12 · 19/05/2023 09:09

It feels like such a weird age. Too old to wear certain looks, too young to be wearing others. I'm on a small budget and can't afford the likes of Hush or Jigsaw.
I'm 5'3 and size 10. Feel like a lot of my clothes have become too young for me so need some tips.

I'm 35 and go between dressing like a teenager to dressing a bit more smartly. I don't really consider my age a factor. I just wear what if feel good in. I find that how I feel about my body has dictated how I dress more than my age.

My usual attire when I'm not in gym wear or my working from home jogging suits is mom jeans or wide leg jeans with a t-shirt and converse.

For the spring/summer I've bought a few pairs of chinos in cream, dusty pink and khaki which I'll wear with either a t-shirt or vest top.

I also quite like a denim dress or shirt dress with either converse or wedges.

I'm mid-thirties but can't imagine changing my style much over the next 5-10 years.

I have a pretty simple style, usually straight jeans/ shorts/ loose cotton trousers in summer, smartish trainers or sandals and simple tops and t shirts, often a V-neck.

I have a couple of short and long sleeved graphic t shirts with prints I like and then I'll often throw over a denim jacket or hoodie.

Tbh it's casual and it's pretty much how I've always dressed and probably always will.

However the fuck you want!

(not being gratuituously sweary, but there was a brilliant link about this with that exact name, and I'll try to find it for you)

Really, the best thing you can do is ditch the ageism and wearing what you feel terrific in

Xiaoxiong · 19/05/2023 09:40

Wear whatever you like! I'm late thirties and the only thing I think I've changed over the years is to switch out skinny jeans and trousers for wider legs, and over time to replace synthetic fabrics with natural ones as things wear out. I now (as inspired by another thread) wear things like white jeans which I never could when the kids were younger as they would stain straight away. I also wear a lot more active wear than I used to but that's because (a) I now WFH three days a week, and (b) activewear is a lot nicer than it used to be! Everything's got more informal anyway, I went to a conference the other day wearing a suit with a t-shirt underneath and trainers and it was 100% fine - back in the day I'd have felt expected to wear a bodycon dress with a jacket and tights and skyscraper heels.

What are the "looks" that you feel you are either too old or too young for? I bet they'd be totally fine on you!

KitchenSinkLlama · 19/05/2023 09:51

Age isn't a factor in clothing. I'm in my mid 50's and have recently (last year) bought a Belstaff leather jacket in a wonderful bright green. It is going to be worn by me until I drop (they last that long). Fuck anyone who says differently.

Do you ever hear men say 'is this outfit age appropriate?' As they get older ? No. So don't you dare either.

Mrsdht · 19/05/2023 10:00

Whatever you want. And that's it. When I was younger I always used to think about being older, what to wear, would we still find the same young faces attractive when we were 50? Remember the older ladies in their elasticated skirt waistbands and it used to fill me with dread!
I can say my dress sense has not changed much. I always used to wear levis and trainers with tshirts. I still do. And joggers and hoodys as i also wfh 5 days. Its just me.
oh, and Also. I do not find young people attractive. Lol.

Going out i switch from above knee dresses to skinny jeans to flared trousers, chinos...anything I feel like really. I'm a size 12 And age 50.

OnSusansFloor · 19/05/2023 10:17

I think I know what you mean, OP. For me it's less about "letting my age dictate what I wear" or obeying some arbitrary societal rules about what different age groups are "allowed" to wear, and more that my priorities and how I spend my time have changed. I no longer need 25 strappy, bodycon dresses in my wardrobe because I spend significantly more time weeding the garden and playing on the floor with the kids than I do at a nightclub! And somewhere between age 16 and age 37 my ideas about beauty / attractiveness have changed, as well as my place on the glamour-comfort spectrum 😏
So, I don't know how on-trend I am (probably not very!), but I spend a lot of time in:
• leggings + t-shirt or lace-trimmed cami + waterfall cardigan
• cigarette trousers / slim chinos + tucked-in-t-shirt or pretty blouse
• plain coloured harem /balloon trousers + slim-fit blouse or t-shirt
I like colourful clothes, so today I'm in emerald green, silk harem pants with a navy+white striped top, and red loafers.
I don't wear many dresses because I'm breastfeeding, but in the summer I'll probably add in some printed midi/maxi skirts and some longer-than-bum-cheek shorts.

What do you spend most of your time doing? What parts of your body do you like best?

fantasmasgoria1 · 19/05/2023 10:22

You wear what you want at my age. I dress in an alternative mainly goth and I always will. I really do not care what other people think.

Yetisrus · 19/05/2023 10:50

Wear whatever you want. Don't fall into the trap of hitting a certain age and changing the way you dress, it's a sure fire way to look frumpy. I went through a stage in my late 30s where I changed how I dressed and I look back and think what was I thinking I look so frumpy.

Your style is your style, what suits one 38 year old may not suit another. I'm 45 still wear mini skirts, skinny jeans, ripped jeans, still dress like a rock chick. But put that on my friend and she'd look ridiculous as it isn't her style.

MovieQueen12 · 19/05/2023 13:27

I seem to live in leggings with a plain coloured t shirt as jeans never fit me well and I find them uncomfortable. I never wear heels, only really trainers.
My style is just plain and boring as don't want to look too young. A lot of the tops out there have childish designs or slogans on and I don't like v necks as am flat chested.
I like the idea of maxi dresses so might look out for those. Don't really like any part of my body. Stumpy legs, bloated stomach and flat bum so that doesn't help matters either.

I feel you should wear what you love. Don't throw clothes out because you feel they are too 'young'. You might miss them or want to incorporate them into future wardrobes. When I was in my mid-thirties, 1980s neon suddenly made a comeback and I went wild for it! I'm in my mid-40s and wear mini skirts in summer. My mother is 75 and dresses from head to tow in leopard patterns. Do what makes you feel happy and comfortable :-)

You don't find young people attractive? That's a peculiar comment. I find attractive people attractive regardless of their age.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 19/05/2023 20:01

Tons of Hush on Vinted if you like that brand!

ineedafairygodmother · 19/05/2023 20:18

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in! I'm late 30's and still wear ripped jeans, cargo pants, leggings..... I do tend to wear staple tops though, plain black/white/grey t-shirts, vest tops, shirts. I hardly ever wear heels too, mainly trainers

My parents always tell me im too old to wear my ripped jeans but they are too comfy to throw away
