As a (nearly) menopausal woman I have started developing lots of light hairs on my chin and my upper lip with the odd dark rogue one that seems to grow overnight and can only be detected in car mirrors. I normally get my eyebrows threaded and tinted and apart from a bit of redness for a while its all good, so when I last went I asked her to do my upper lip/chin too.....

OMG - it was super painful (especially upper lip) and when she had finished I looked like I had been punched in the mouth. It took a couple of days for the redness to settle but then I developed loads of white painful pus like spots on my upper lip and itchy chin. 4 days later they have only just started to clear.

Clearly, this wasn't the look I was aiming for 😂Is this normal? Will my skin get used to it? What methods of face hair removal works better than this!

Not strictly relevant perhaps but when I was pregnant I grow a sort of second coat on my head. like a wire-haired terrier very tough, kinked hair.

In my experience if you’re prone to the whiteheads after epilation it doesn’t get better no matter what you do.

I can’t use creams either so am stuck with shaving, which isn’t as bad as it sounds with a facial razor. Takes 5 minutes and you don’t need to wait until you look like Fu Manchu first.

Oh the joys of meno 😭 I use a combination of facial razors (Wilkinson sword)and I have a JML electric facial trimmer (fab as it has a little light).
Works really well and exfoliates my face at the same time. My skin tends to look better afterwards too .

I have my upper lip and chin salon waxed around every six weeks.

Flawless Touch ,it's really good and perfect for light hairs.

6 weeks???? I would think my hairs would be quite visible after about 3

Highdaysandholidays1 · 18/05/2023 18:29

What is that with only noticing these hairs in the car? It's always when you don't have your tweezers on you! I might try a Flawless Touch thingy, I currently shave the whole darn thing (peach fuzz and the wiry ones) about once a week, then tweezer them as needed in between, but that's most days. Plus I do always seem to miss some.

Why is it that the hair on my head is going whiter but my chin hair is going darker!

I've made my kids promise to epilate my chin in the old people's home. I can't have electrolysis as too light-haired...

LoobyDop · 18/05/2023 18:31

It’s less bad if you remove all makeup first, and put aloe vera gel with a very tiny bit of lavender oil on afterwards. Also, holding a cold compress against it for a few minutes will help a lot with the redness.

I found one of those light up mirrors with a magnifying part a godsend. I looked up the one I bought on amazon but it was unavailable. Its rechargeable rather than batteries. I shave with an electric razor but use tweezers with the above mirror for wiry ones

scoobydoo1971 · 19/05/2023 00:16

PCOS menopausal yeti here. My tips for dealing with the fuzz are lasering, electrolysis, Facial bleach for hair (jolie) and good quality dermaplane blade (better than bog standard razor). Boots do a range of flat ended tweezers that are nifty at swiping short hairs without creating pot hole in skin. It also helps to step away from magnifying mirrors. Not many people are going to get that close to you in everyday interaction, and those works of evil make the problem look worse than it is.

I sometimes use my leg epilator on my top lip - hurts like a motherfucker at first but you do get used to it and the hair doesn't grow back for a while.

Get one of those IPL light things from Amazon. The one with squillions of positive reviews for under £100… or Lumina if you have the dollar.

After a couple of months spending 10 mins zapping the hairs 2 -3 times a week and you won’t have a problem. I am talking as 50 year old with dark thick hair and life long PCOS. Wish these things had been around 30 years ago!

Mary46 · 19/05/2023 12:04

Hi op I did 2 lasers on my lip. Nightmare with dark hair too. She said face hair can be very strong hair. Lol. I need a few more sessions. Defs increase in menopause

Amazing - thank you!

For anyone who has used the IPL - would it work on light upper lip hairs or just dark hair?
