Zinc and niacimide serum making skin dry and flaky

I've always had dry skin that's reactive to some skincare ingredients so I tend to stick with things I know rather than experiment. In my 50s though I've been getting hormonal spots which look hideous and leave dark scars when they finally go, so after reading about niacimide and zinc serum on here I thought I'd try it.

I did a patch test and had no allergic reaction in 24 hrs - happy days - but having used it only twice since, my skin is so dry on the areas I applied it that it's flaking in patches. Far too soon to see if the intended result on the blemishes/scars has been achieved of course. Is this part of the deal: does it dry out the skin and you just have to up the moisturiser to counteract it? Will it settle when my skin gets used to it? Or is it going to wreck my skin further and best give up now? I use Avene Tolerance for dry reactive skin but my skin feels very tight and a bit raw even after applying that this morning.

Yes, I think you'll have to up the moisturizer for a bit. Something like La Roche Posay Nutritic (glass jar one) or Cicaplast B5 baume.
I've just had a week of no actives as I did something to my skin barrier and was all red round my nose and mouth and a couple of days of Cicaplast has me sorted.

Zinc can be pretty drying, I'm assuming this is the Ordinary serum? That one really is mostly of use for acne prone oily skin.

Thanks @NowZeusHasLainWithLeda - I'll pick up some Cicaplast today. Is it the cream (baume) rather than the gel you'd recommend?

@botemp It's not The Ordinary, it's another brand (Revolution) but similar

Yes, big tube of cream. I got mine from Amazon, was about £14 on offer.

Ah, yes, Revolution duped the Ordinary, nearly identical products, anyhow original point stands, zinc is meant for oily skin. If you're struggling with post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or erythema (PIE) you're better off incorporating tranexamic acid and/or arbutin. And sunscreen above all else, goes without saying.
