Transitioning to grey, any tips appreciated!

So, at the age if 50 I have finally decided that I'm fed up with the treadmill of dying my hair - my natural colour was strawberry blond as a child then mid Auburn as an adult, started finding a few grey hairs by my late 20's .
I'd estimate that I'm around 60-70% grey on my roots now and last had my hair dyed approximately 8 weeks ago.
I live in a hot country so my dyed hair lightens a lot in the summer by the time I'm due to get a colour ( was getting it done every 6-8 weeks )
I have my hair in a longish bob but have to tie it back for work. My ddaughter has already suggested a cloth headband or scarf for when its tied up & I'm willing to just go with the flow when it's in a bob, keep it in good condition and trimmed.
What is a good shampoo and conditioner for the growing in phase ? Will I need to update my makeup as I'm beginning to look a bit washed out with my grey roots ? I'm expecting this process to last around 12 -18 months and want to look ok during it.
TIA

Have you read about the man in California - Jack Martin- so in demand - only does ''grey'' ? see www.allure.com

Break your parting up, rather than a straight line.
Tie a scarf or headband.
Tbh the oh you need your roots done phase isnt that look then it gets apparent its being grown out.
Or do as I did and shave it 😆
This is mine now

*That long not look

What I did was colour strip my hair a few times which took a lot of colour out and really lightened things, then as I had block white round my face I bleached that section. With my hair up, it looked fine while I waited for the rest to grow out. If your grey is more distributed then fine highlights will break up the grow out line

Brightredtulips · 17/05/2023 16:27

I had my hair cut short then went for it. A few small highlights at one point to help me. Purple shampoo once a week. Hair mask and good conditioner. Its now shoulder length and I wouldn't ever go back to the hassle of colouring it brown.

PuppyMonkey · 17/05/2023 16:40

I just thought sod it and went cold turkey from dark brown to grey, didn’t really do anything to cope with the growing out phase.

Dont forget your grey doesn’t just grown down from your parting, it grows from underneath, the back of your neck, your temples… it can look a bit light highlights. But yes scarves and things help. Or tie it up in a bun?

I definitely needed to change my clothes and make up. Bright red lipstick will be your friend through this. And I find white, navy, royal blue and black are the best colours for me to wear clothes wise.

I think mine all grew out from a dark bob to a completely grey bob in two years.

I just stopped dyeing and braved the stripe, my hair grows so quickly that it wasn't long before it was obvious I was growing it out. Purple shampoo and conditioner/masks help keep the greys bright - I love White Hot Hair products. I wore more and brighter makeup during the growing out phase and now I'm grey as I look a bit washed out without any on

Thank you all - @Cocolapew and @Brightredtulips your hair looks amazing.
I will definitely need to update my lipstick too !

I just went cold turkey and wore a lot of ponytails to hide the early regrowth. Make up wise I use softer eye eyeliner as my dark brown started looking too harsh and go for a stronger lip, usually red which I never wore when I had dark hair.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/05/2023 06:33

Im fully grey now. I never had my hair cut short. I coped by:

Using the powder concealer on my hair and the spray that covered my roots for as long as i could get away with it. Sometimes i wore a thick fabric headband.
After that, I wore it up a lot. I then went to the hairdresser. She chopped layers into my hair that seemed to blend the line of ot growing out.
It made me feel so much more confident. I felt i could wear it down. I then just wore it up if it bugged me.
I just kept getting the ends choppef off every few months. I had very dark hair. It eventually had only small bits of colour at the end.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/05/2023 06:35

As for make up, i focus on my eyes. Ive never worn lipstick. Good definition wirh eyes. Not shadow so much but brows, lashes and liner.
A bit of blush.

Fanola non yellow purple shampoo is great.

IdentifyWithNotAs · 18/05/2023 06:48

I lightened my hair until it was a blonde shade close to the tone of the grey roots (home dyes), then got a very short cut. I prefer Philip Kingsley silver shampoo (purple) as it gives the grey a steel blue edge. It’s still at mid grey but I’m likely to be totally white by my late 50s. I love not dying my hair any more which is been doing since my teens.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 18/05/2023 07:20

I went lighter with my colouring so there wasn't so much of a drastic change when my hair grew out.

I also used those root sprays you can buy to start with, the tried not to have a perfect parting. You've just got to grit your teeth and get it over with.

I now love my grey hair and would never go back to dying it.

Your hair looked great at all stages! Looked like you had it dyed ultra trendy style!

Cocolapew · 18/05/2023 13:32

I went the opposite way with red lipstick, I wore it for years but stopped wearing any during covid/wearing masks and now wear a lighter one or none.
I did start wearing rosier blusher though.

MorrisZapp · 18/05/2023 13:46

Wish my greys would turn up! My hair is dishwater coloured and I have blonde highlights which damage my hair and cost a fortune.

If I had enough grey to lighten up my hair I'd grow it out and embrace it. But so far it's a tiny smattering, and the mousy dishwater is hanging on strong 🙄

I grew it out a bit during lockdown but it looked shit.

Catspyjamas17 · 18/05/2023 14:01

I'm 47 and letting my colour grow out and greys come in. I suppose I got to a stage where the colour wasn't too dramatically different from my natural hair and the greys are about 20% I'd say at the most. If when it has all grown out it looks too dull or doesn't suit me I might have a few blonde highlights to lift it a little.

What keeps me going is that generally my hair seems better condition when I leave it alone. I'm trying to grow it a bit too but also having it trimmed regularly. It looks ok and some people ask whether I've had an ombre effect done on purpose as the ends are lighter.

I also shaved mine off in lockdown to a no:1 I looked like a convict but its grown now

2pence · 18/05/2023 22:42

Platinum highlights should help the transition. I have a few blonde bits at the bottom of my long hair but don't need to keep highlighting any more as the grey just blends in now.

Annarabbit · 18/05/2023 22:59

Leave it another 6 weeks so that you can clearly see the pattern of grey hair, then get a patient hairdresser to put baby fine platinum highlights in to match your pattern of grey. Then you can grow it out easily. Wella silver shampoo.
