Best bra for back fat

I’ve been avoiding buying a bra for far too long because they all just seem to have overspillage around the base of the straps at the back or around the armpits at the front, unless the bra is actually too big for me.

I just wind up demoralised and uncomfortable. M&S told me it was just to be expected but it feels so uncomfortable and I hate seeing the rolls of my back in photos where they cut in.

I’m a size 10 and around a 32/34 C cup, so not big, just lots of looser skin now I guess. What are your best recommendations for a smooth line, back fat friendly bra? Ideally something that isn’t a Granny bra, but aware I can’t be picky at this point!

The right size helps.

If you're a size 10 you are unlikely to be a 34 band.

Measure round your ribs where your bra would sit.

Is that measurement 34? Or even 32?

No?

Then try a Bra size calculator or bra shop.

Sometimes people have back fat because their cups are too small so breast tissue spills under the arms.

You might end up something like a 28F. Smile

You’re probably wearing the wrong size

Op I swear by this bra from M&S super comfy and hides back fat completely because it's thicker but has the pattern on it which makes it look nicer. Excellent hold aswell.

AnnaMagnani · 17/05/2023 06:32

If your a size 10, you are in the wrong size. Smaller band, bigger cup and all that back and armpit fat will disappear.

I'm a size 14/16 and wearing a 34 band so probably unlikely that you are a 34 as well.

Bumblebee413 · 17/05/2023 07:23

But if I go smaller won’t it squash and overflow even more? Sorry if this is a silly question, very, very grateful for all replies so far! X

I wear a bra called Sumptuously Soft from M and S. It’s soooo comfy that I don’t even know I’ve got it on.

But yes, definitely go for a fitting at M and S. They’re very helpful and after measuring me, the shop assistant was happy to go and fetch different bras for me to try whilst I stayed in the changing room.

I thought I was a 34B, turns out I’m a 36C!

I wouldn't go to M&S for a bra fitting - I'd find an independent lingerie shop or somewhere like Bravissimo. I'm a size 16 with a 34 back so unlikely that you are too. You probably need to go up a cup size or 2 so your breast tissue can sit in the cup, rather than spreading round your body.

You could try doing a measurement yourself at home using the Boob or Bust method and then look at their advice on the right style bra for your boob shape. https://www.booborbust.com/

As a general rule at a size 10 your measurements should be around 30
12/32
14/34
16/36
18/38

Etc.... so get yourself measured and choose a bra with wide sides and three hooks to hold your ( probably not that extensive) back fat in place.

CosyCoffee · 17/05/2023 09:02

I'd say a crop top style bra with wide straps. I have this one from m&s, it's super comfy and gives a smooth line.

carolinestowcrat · 17/05/2023 09:08

You need a bra with a smaller back and bigger cup, along with scooping your breasts into place.

Give M&S a wide berth and seek out an independent bra shop who will measure you properly.

I don’t quite agree with the above, band fit varies by brand. Not all brands work using the band size equal to rib size thing. If your band is very snug then it will indent and you will get a bulge above and below.
What helps give a smoother line is having a band that is slightly deeper, a three or four hook band, rather than a two hook. You want a band that is stretchy, as a C cup you might want structure or shaping but you won’t need huge amounts of support. So the band doesn’t need to be extra tight, but it does need to be tight enough not to ride up when you wear it as that will also give you bulges. Go for cups that are well structured, T shirts bras with slightly padded cups might work well, and then a band size in the brand you are trying on that sits flat and parallel, but not so tightly that it cuts in.
Experiment with different strap settings, cross straps, straps that sit closer in on your shoulders, the strap position might work better for you in one style than another. You might even find that crop top type bras with cups inside feel comfortable and look smooth but also give shape.

If I wear the bra size I measure at, my flab spills over at the back and under my arms
Definitely not breast tissue, it's fat.
If I go uo a band size and down a cup size, it all looks much better and I still have sufficient boob support and coverage.

Bumblebee413 · 17/05/2023 10:17

Thank you all so very much, I really appreciate it x

Last time I was in M&S I heard from the next cubicle

^"So that measures just over 27 so we'll try a 32 first."

Yeah, you adjust, your size isn't the law it's your best starting point.

TennisWithDeborah · 17/05/2023 12:03

I’m an in-proportion size 14 with a BMI of 29 and I am a 34. Like others, I really think that you need a proper fitting.

Bravissimo is very good and carries a wide range.

The swoop and scoop is vital isn't it?

Most of us have been squashing on too small cups for twenty years and pushing breast tissue under our arms.

My bras don't look like they fit me until I do it.
