dream kitchen

BUT the price tag is tooo much.

I do not really want to get a carpenter to custom build me one. I want simple preferably wooden doors that have only very plain detailing on them. I also want some shiney chrome handles and knobs.

Do any of you lovely ladies have any recommendations of a good kitchen? (I know its been done to death on here but I am desperado)

what is your budget?

Maidamess · 18/02/2008 20:49

Ooh, now you're asking. We are having a big old extension and had factored the cost into that, but not as a separate thing.

I reckon the whole thing, cupboards, worktops, appliances (new oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher, hob)will have to come in around the £3500 mark. I think.

I'm absolutely sure with some careful planning and choosing you can assemble something very similar from IKEA. They do solid wood worktops and doors - we have them, though the doors are not painted but they do do painted ones or you could paint them. Good selection of knobs though you can choose them from anywhere. We didn't like any of their sinks so we ordered one online from a sink company and the ikea fitters put it in.

They get some stick but our experience was great.

I got my kitchen from this lot:

handmade kitchens

Not sure my kitchen looks quite as well made as the ones in their gallery (although that may be down to my rubbish builders - some of the doors are not quite straight) but they were very helpful.

oxocube · 18/02/2008 20:55

oooooohhh ........... no idea at all but that's beautiful. Would also be my dream kitchen.

Maidamess · 18/02/2008 20:57

Thanks for replies so far.

Goosey, I hope you don't mind me asking, was your kitchen reasonably priced? I do like the look of the ones on the site.

IKEA do very reasonable kitchens, and their appliances are a good price and a good quality as well. We got a kitchen from IKEA and it cost us £1700 including worktops and handles and finishing touches, but excluding appliances. We spent £200 on a range cooker and hood from eBay and £200 on a ex-display model built-in fridge. My husband is very handy, so installed everything himself, saving a fortune too.

If you have any tradesman in the family, howdens is good for kitchens.

They sell to many off the DIY stores, the kitchens in both our houses are from there.

chonky · 18/02/2008 21:14

What about Howdens? We have this kitchen, but mixed with lots of old original pine cupboards and shelves, and nice knobs as opposed to the yukkola ones in the photo.

Howdens

Pannacotta · 18/02/2008 21:15

Harevy JOnes kitchens look similar to Plain English but are from around 8K I think and even less in the sale (now on).

Pannacotta · 18/02/2008 21:18

sorry just saw your budget and HJ is prob over but might be worth checking on sale reductions.
If not then agree that IKEA is prob the way to go. YOu could have IKEA carcasses and have doors made in the same style as the P English ones and then painted in posh F&B colours.

midnightexpress · 18/02/2008 21:20

Second (or third) Howdens - we got our kitchen there - not wood, but pretty similar to your picture and similar colour too.

ZippiBabes · 18/02/2008 21:20

There is a price list at prices

I think mine came in at around £3000 for a medium sized kitchen (in pine which we then painted) and that included making special sized units to exactly fit the space.

ZippiBabes · 18/02/2008 21:22

and should be within your budget

the doors they have are the second nature ones if you look at those in a independent kitchen retailer but much cheaper than a litchen retailer

all prices and sizes download from the web site

GooseyLoosey · 18/02/2008 21:22

Just to reiterate, not sure that the workmanship is what you would get with the more expensive ones, but then you get what you pay for. I like mine and I have had people ask if its Mark Wilkinson (ha ha).

KristinaM · 18/02/2008 21:27

i also got my kitchen from handmade kitchens ( same as goosey loosey)and the quality of the units is EXCELLENT. all the trades people we used (builder, joiner, electrician, plumber etc) were very impressed

the prices are on their website, maidamess. they are very good value but i think they will probably be outside your budget, if its only £2.5K for units AND worktops, unless your kitchen is tiny

and you will need to be a bargain hunter to get oven , hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher, sink, tap, lighting, sockets, switches etc for £1K

and what about flooring and splashbacks?

is there any way you coudl find a bit more ££££? if not i think ikea and howdens woudl be your best bet - excellent quality for the money

have you done a rough plan so you can price things up?

Maidamess · 18/02/2008 21:29

Thanks fio for your positive input....not!

Everyone else, your links are amazing! I feel much more positive I can get 'the look' I really don't want it to look like a traditional flush fitted kitchen.

FWIW my dh has just told me the budget may be up to £7k! I nearly fell off my chair.

peasoup · 18/02/2008 21:29

That was my dream kitchen too!! Asked Plain English to price up a unit about 5 ft long with three cupboard doors and three drawers. They quoted £3000!!! My local joiner built me the same thing for £500. MDF interiour but hard wood exterior. I had to buy and fix my own handles and painted it myself but his workmanship was excellent and copied the Spitalfield kitchen exactly. CAT me if you want his details; he's in Brixton; he's done lots of lovely carpentry for us. We got the work top seperately, so £500 didn't include that. I think we got it cheap as we'd given him lots of work and recommended him to lots of folks but he's always very reasonable in price and lovely workmanship.

quickdrawmcgraw · 18/02/2008 21:29

oooh I love the kitchen! I'm going to bookmark it for whenver I can convince dh we need to change our old one.
I may have to have an accident with a chainsaw or something. hmmmm [thinks]

Maidamess · 18/02/2008 21:38

peasoup thanks! But have no idea how to cat. I can do email though!
