Does anyone else stick to a kind of “uniform”

I have always been interested in clothes and fashion but it’s taken me a very long time to realise that you really need to think about your lifestyle when choosing clothes. And now my lifestyle is pretty unexciting - going into the office twice a week and then wfh and when not working, mainly at home or just going out to exercise or just local shops. I don’t have an active social life.

so while I have some lovely things hanging in my wardrobe, I tend to wear jeans with sweater in winter or stripy tops etc in the summer. If very hot I do wear summer dresses. For work it’s mainly skirts with sweaters or sweater dresses (I get cold!). I love the idea of silk shirts etc but there is no point putting them on if I am going to Tesco (or even Waitrose 😆). The things I wear are nice, but do follow a theme…

on the back of some recent threads, I looked at brands like Raey but even if I wanted to spend that much, I would not have anywhere to wear those clothes, even though I work in a professional environment…

anyone else?

Yes, I have a uniform. I work entirely from home, so expensive clothes are a waste. I do have a social life but everyone I know just wears jeans or chinos in summer.

So my uniform is jeans/jeggings and leggings in winter, and chinos or linen trousers in summer. Very rarely wear dresses. I almost bought a silk shirt the other day but then I bought more casual tops instead!

Actual uniform at work. Otherwise I live in gym clothes. Always ready to exercise but rarely do any 😂😂 but if I need to run for the bus you can bet I'll be ready to 😂

I agree.

I get seduced by ideas on here for lovely things (silk blouse i a perfect example) and buy them - only to never put them on, or take them off at the last minute, because it's out of my comfort zone and/or i don't really know what i'm doing with it🙄

I find it hard to break out of a certain silhouette of clothes, if that makes sense? I'm used to wearing fitted bottom and fitted top with some sort of floaty or long slim top layer. Fabrics dependant on season, but basically the same through the year. Only real variation is when it's SO damn hot you don't give a damn and wander about in very little at all!

Just lately i've moved tentatively into properly wide leg trousers <gasp> (with fitted top of course) and I feel so out there!😂It's really different for me and folks have noticed and complimented.

A lot of my friends and family all seem to stick to a certain style of their own as well though. So it's not just me. (and you OP)

Following with interest, I have a few maxi dresses but hardly wear them as I bought them thinking I would look willowy and boho chic in them but I actually look quite frumpy 😭 I tend to wear jeans, jumper and trainers/timberlands in winter so that's my uniform I suppose but I'm worried about what to wear in Summer as hate my legs.

I made the BIG mistake of buying leggings again (first time since about 1998) about a year ago and it's hard getting out of them.

Too comfy.

But i'm sick of myself in them.

Yep I have a uniform. For work it’s black skinnies with a variety of pretty blouses/tops and a couple of pairs of boots for variety.

At home it’s gym wear when I’m WFH (more likely to fit in bits of exercise through the day that way!)

I have a wardrobe full of dresses too that tend to only get worn in the garden on sunny days!

Btw the ‘uniform’ is a trick used by people like Obama and Mark Zuckerberg too to cut down the mental load of making decisions. You’ll nearly always see Mark Z in jeans and a grey T-shirt.

GeriKellmansUpdo · 14/05/2023 19:04

Oh yes, gym wear. I live in that 3 days out of the week and it does make me more likely to go for a run.

I am 51 and I have worked in fashion retail for years, I like fashion in general even though I don't follow trends. I do have a "uniform " which I have built up over the years and I add as I go along. These are clothes that make me feel comfortable but put together. I wear a lot of navy blue with white , beige, and grey. Linen shirts and trousers in summer ,cashmere sweaters, hats and scarves in winter worn with navy trousers and Adidas Original trainers I add nice accessories (designer bag,men watch, understated jewellery). My daily life is not that different from yours ,supermarket, coffee with friends once in a while, lunch or dinner out with my family. Some of my clothes are from the high street (M&S,Cos,Arket) and some are designers.I buy with longevity in mind so I'd rather spend a bit more for natural fabric and a better cut.

Actually the mental load is a good point. Because while I would not want to wear the same thing every day (that’s a bit extreme for me!) there is actually a lot of planning and thinking involved in wearing lots of interesting outfits, and you have to have the right shoes, etc.

Yes!

Late 30s, size 10, wfh half the week and office the other half, professional role

I wear skinny jeans and a long sleeved top pretty much all the time, usually in similar colours, black top with black jeans, navy top with blue jeans

I do feel like I need branch out a bit now as as I want to dress up a little bit more. I feel like my clothes are so boring and I want an upgrade.

GeriKellmansUpdo · 14/05/2023 19:22

My summer dresses from last year saw so little wear that I am recycling them this year.

Do you remember the film "9 1/2 weeks" where the character played by Mickey Rourke had a wardrobe full of exactly the same clothes? I am almost there! 😆😉

Floisme · 14/05/2023 19:40

Hmm, I like the mental load.

I'm retired now and getting to grips with a new lifestyle but I'm buggered if I'm giving up on wearing clothes I like - it's just that now I wear them for volunteering, or the coffee shop, or a Sunday brunch with my husband. These aren't 'occasion clothes' by the way, they're just some of my favourite things.

I use sites like Raey for the same reason I used to buy Vogue every month - for inspiration and ideas, not for writing a shopping list.

That said, I do have more of a uniform in the summer because I struggle a bit with hot weather dressing as I like to cover up. Plus summer only lasts about 3 weeks in these parts so no point in building up a big wardrobe for it.
