Vinted Sunglasses

Hi!

Seen some sunglasses I've loved for years on Vinted. Only thing is they're Chanel. The photos look great and I don't think anyone could tell either way in real life if they're authentic or not but I don't want to spend £150 on what could be fakes.... I asked the seller if she bought them new and she said she got them as a gift so no receipt or anything. I'm talking myself out of it but they are soooooooo pretty!

What would you do?!

I don't think I'd spend £150 on sunglasses - never have before, most has been £50ish. I can just about afford it but seems so risky... but they were crazy money full price years ago when I first saw them. Think I might be caught up in the excitement of finding them! With no way to return if I change my mind.

Think I'm talking myself out of it.

But what if they are the real deal 😬 don't want to regret it!

Have been messaging the seller and am confident they're a real person etc, but what if the gift they thought was real was fake?!

Hmmm, the age old, 'these were a gift and I don't have a receipt', could be true but it is more than likely the seller is trying to cover up that they are counterfeit goods.

£150 is pretty expensive for second hand sunglasses that are fairly dated. However if you really love the style, then I would try and find them from a company that verifies designer products like Vestiaire Collective, I certainly would buy them from Vinted/Ebay.

Chanel sunglasses are nothing special in terms of quality, even if they are real. I agree with PP that £150 is a lot for second hand (and I say this as someone who loves sunglasses, not someone who would never dream of spending money on them), especially for an item which is faked so often. I wouldn’t risk it.

Have you got £150 to throw away if they are fake/ broken/ scratched?

LiftyLift · 14/05/2023 07:24

I would be very very careful with the seller. How many reviews do they have? Make sure you read them all. Are they reviews are buyer or seller?

BerryTrifle · 14/05/2023 07:46

I definitely wouldn't risk it! You could get a pretty fancy pair of sunglasses for £150 new!

botemp · 14/05/2023 07:50

IME there's more fakes than real Chanel sunglasses out there as they are easily picked up on holiday in the usual destinations. The old gift excuse would be a red flag for me.

For high end purchases on Vinted, check if they're selling them elsewhere, if someone is also selling it on Vestiaire (with the higher commission but mandatory authentication) or HEWI it's usually more likely to be real but tbh I wouldn't buy any popular high end items on Vinted as the likelihood of a fake is just too high, no matter the asking price. I've reported tonnes of fakes too Vinted and they don't always remove what are obvious fakes Hmm

I sold a very expensive pair of Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses on Vinted and because it was a designer brand I had to jump through a few hoops to get them listed such as providing extra images of packaging & logos which they scanned.

It's not foolproof but they do try.

What are the sellers reviews like?

Plexie · 14/05/2023 07:57

If they're fake, are they likely to have tinted lenses with no UV protection? The whole point of sunglasses is to protect your eyes. Unless you're only going to wear them indoors, no way would I wear 'sun' glasses that would damage my eyes, let alone spend £150 on them.

shelbabab · 14/05/2023 10:16

I honestly wouldn't risk it for £150. I might take the chance at £30-£40 but def not for as much money as that!

Tryingtogetitright · 14/05/2023 12:37

Thank you all! You have been voices of reason!

I've decided not to get them - I think I was just carried away as I've loved them for so long but think they are too good to be true! There is a pair on Vestiaire for £250 (never looked before? thanks for the recommendation!) and I think if I ever decide to go for it I would buy through there.

Having scrutinised the photos more thoroughly I spotted a flaw on one arm too which confirmed I made the right choice in not buying in an excited frenzy! I think even if I did buy them I'd always be wondering if I'd been scammed when so not worth the risk - £150 is a LOT of money! Good point on whether they'd actually protect your eyes or not too.

Thank you all again!
