Me & Em - worth it?

NotLovingWFH · 13/05/2023 20:42

I’m in my 50’s and have always bought my clothes from places like H&M, the most expensive place I’ve ever shopped is Hush and it’s generally secondhand to fit my budget.
suddenly my FB is full of Me & Em and I really like some of their stuff, particularly a cheesecloth jumpsuit and some wide leg trousers. It’s very expensive for me and I could only afford one or two items at most. Is it worth it? It’s not a brand I’m familiar with and i don’t have money to waste. There are a couple of bits on Vinted too but even secondhand they’re more than I usually spend new.

It is very nice and lasts well, but it's worth waiting for the sales which are very reduced.

It used to be great but the quality has gone downhill in recent years (although not the prices....). I had two dresses from them a couple of years ago where the seams split very quickly - basically poor shoddy workmanship in the Far East. If you can buy a vintage piece on ebay or vinted they should last - I've still got pieces from the early collections that are going strong despite a lot of use.

I've got these ads coming up too. Bit out of my budget this year. Maybe next year.

LadyLapsang · 13/05/2023 22:01

I bought a lot from them at the beginning, mainly in sales and I picked up lots of great things at a town hall sale in Chelsea. Excellent value for money and items wash well with hardly any pressing needed. I have trousers, shirts, blouses, dresses and T shirts and a few sweaters. You really need to hand wash a lot of the sweaters.

Mitchumforthewin · 13/05/2023 23:08

I keep getting the jumpsuit ad (the black one with the wide legs) it’s so nice! But also out of m price range and I don’t think I’d have much occasion to wear it. Shame as it’s really lovely.

Lucia574 · 13/05/2023 23:15

I really like their stuff and find it still good quality. Are you tall-ish? I’m 171cm and their trousers are spot on for me.

Mochacino · 13/05/2023 23:21

I keep getting these ads too and the white cheesecloth dress is beautiful but it seems so expensive

Verite1 · 13/05/2023 23:25

I have lots of Me and Em. It is expensive but the quality is good. Often bargains in the sales. It runs big though - buy size below in general.

Hal9001 · 13/05/2023 23:25

It's pretty good.

I'm 5' 9" nearly, the trousers do come up long.

It's mainly synthetic, but good synthetic.

It's good stuff.

I buy mainly very expensive clothes but I've been out and about and complemented on a couple of Me&Em bits.

Worth a punt I'd say.

This, I buy in their sales which have excellent reductions. The full price is too steep for me.

NotLovingWFH · 14/05/2023 09:25

Thank you that’s really helpful. I am fairly tall so good to know the trousers are a good length. I think I might order something to try. I love the wide leg jumpsuit but can’t imagine I’d have much use for it sadly.

I’m tall too - 1.78

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 14/05/2023 09:53

Used to buy there but quality isn’t as good now .. plus they seem to have a lot of big droopy trousers and dresses which don’t suit me

Nottodaty · 14/05/2023 09:58

I’m tall the trousers fit nice. Tops hit and miss - lovely quality but I have found sometimes they not long enough to cover me - I’m a size 12/14 with a bit of a peri menopause stomach - but I’d expect it to cover my belly button 😬
The few bits I do have wash well and quality lasted.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 14/05/2023 13:45

In my opinion, no. The quality is better than H&M but not enough to justify the price difference even in the sales.
I used to get bits in the sale but I think it's one of those companies that a beautiful website and placement of model + clothing lull you into thinking you're getting something that's a lot better than it turns out to be.
(M&S wide legged jersey trousers for example at about £20 have lasted me years longer than Me &Em Palazzo pants, also jersey, but thinner, and lost all shape after a couple of months. For £70 in the sale. )

lindyloo57 · 14/05/2023 17:21

@NowZeusHasLainWithLeda how do you get your m&s trouser to last, I brought last year two pairs, they were £17.50 each, within two washers had faded so much I can't wear them , I do use a liquid for colours, so it's put me off buying another pair.

sleepwhenidie · 14/05/2023 17:32

The wide leg trousers are fabulous (cotton/flannel rather than jersey). I’m not as keen on the pointe fabric they use for dresses sometimes (and trousers I think)-this seems less worth the £.

I use non bio liquid for my darks so they don't fade as fast, and with blacks, I pop them in with a Dylon pod every year. Keeps them black and not washed out.

lindyloo57 · 14/05/2023 17:45

I do use use a liquid for colours, is the Dylon pod a black dye? I might give it a go

You can loads of colours. I use the black on trousers, but have also used other colours when I've had a bleach splash incident. They're so easy to use as well. Just pop them in the machine and give it a rinse afterwards.
