Sorry - i know theres been loads of threads on this. But there must be someone else sitting there tonight thinking the same thing.

Cant really afford to have it done all the time at hairdressers. Highlights make me looked like a washed up WAG. So dark permanents it is. except they only last about 3 weeks. And im poisoning my insides apparently.

What do you do??????????????????????

Apart from my hair i dont look too bad really (in a dark room with 20 watt bulb) for my age.

What shall I dooooooooooooooooooooo

(I realise I sound quite hysterical and unhinged about this.)

I used to do a Nice & Easy permanent dye in close to my natural colour. My white roots would start to be obvious at around 3 weeks, and I'd try to hold out for another 2 or 3 if possible.

Now that I am earning, I get a complicated thing done at the hairdressers every half-term. I've basically gone blonde from quite a dark brunette. It means that there is not a dramatic margin between the old and new growth, and it still tends to look OK after a couple of months.

The only other option is to go grey, but I personally am not ready for that yet.

mazzystar · 18/02/2008 18:51

been going grey for about 5 years, am 38
my mum was completley silver by 25 so count myself lucky
i get mine done with a semi-permanent at the hairdressers, seems to last about 6 - 8 weeks with appropriate conditioner
have a friend who just accepted it and went totally grey, she was lucky to be slim and have elfin good features though, its a good look for the brave

PixelHerder · 18/02/2008 18:58

I've been doing my grey at home for years (was 'brunette' about 100 years ago, before premature grey set in).

Have tried every dye going - semis are better for avoiding obvious roots but you do get fading on the grey so your greys look like highlights.

Permanents give better coverage, but I now look like a badger as the roots come through, so am going back to semis.

Tip - black semis fade better than browns, which tend to go a horrible tobacco-ish colour on grey when they fade. Black just goes a dark greyish usually. If you are a 'dark cool' brunette (eg celtic skin/hair tones) then black may suit you better than brown/tobacco.

I used to mix black and plum, but you can end up with purple/grey highlights which can be a bit scary if you're not used to it!

Coolmama · 18/02/2008 18:59

Am also 38 and started going grey at about 22 or 23. Because my hair grows really fast, anything semi-permanent would be a PITA as I would have to do something every 2 weeks and can't be bothered so I have just left it and now have a silvery tone to my brunette hair - I like it a lot and the other day a lady stopped me to ask who did my lovely highlights!!!

ZippiBabes · 18/02/2008 19:01

i use loreal coleur experte and do it about 6 to 8 weeks

it stays in good condition too

i use charles worthington brilliant shine shampoo and conditioner

and it looks natural imo

but glossy

especially cinsidering my advanced age

dont think the guy i am seeing knows i dye it

but he is a physicist

kizzie · 18/02/2008 19:25

my mother keeps telling me that 'its about time you started going lighter anyway. You're not as young as you think you are'

Really doesnt help a great deal.

Going to try a semi this weekend again i think to try and see how long it lasts. At least any damage i might be doing be dyeing so regularly might be reduced???????

also am 37

3 years ago i had no dc and no grey hairs

i now have 2 dc and many more grey hairs

i make myself feel better by having an all-over tint plus highlights every other cut

southeastastra · 18/02/2008 19:28

yes i have a few, off to top up my washed up wag look tomorrow

kizzie · 18/02/2008 19:32

the washed up WAG wouldnt have been so bad if i didnt look so pale. Maybe i should have added some fake tan in to help lift my complexion. It WAS much easier - greys no where near as obvious as quickly. But my eyes didnt look blue anymore [sob]

I am a dark brunette and have been going grey gacefully since I was 21, but once I had the DS's it is white.

I tried the hightligting route, but I have curly hair and the lightner made it frizzy and my roots were really visable, so I have gone back to the hairdressers and get the roots done when I have a cut, it is not too pricey, as the ends keep the colour well

lou33 · 18/02/2008 19:36

i'm 41 and been going grey for years

i used to dye it myself, but a friend has recently opened her own salon, so i now get it done professionally for free

cmotdibbler · 18/02/2008 19:37

I have had a big grey streak since I was 25, so have had to dye my hair since about 21 to not look grey. Am now 36, and have gone from being dark brown, coloured to red, to brown and white, coloured to very light brown.

I do it myself with Boots own brand permanent, and am now branching out into a root touchup kit. Fortunatly as I'm white in streaks it sort of self highlights.

I have done the whole hairdresser and highlights thing, but my work life is too chaotic to go to regular appointments.

oliviaelanasmum · 18/02/2008 19:41

I wilb be 26 on saturday and have had grey hairs in my parting and sides for about 12 years

My sil pointed them out on saturday not realising they have always been hiding under copius hair dyes!

blousy · 18/02/2008 19:41

I too am 37 and horrendously grey (started when I was about 15 ). I couldn't entertain the thought of going au naturel though as my hair is long and curly, suspect I'd look like a hag.
I mostly dye mine at home, sometimes at hairdresser. When the roots start to show I use that John Freida colour glossing stuff which is great for disguising the greys for a couple of weeks more.

hairtwiddler · 18/02/2008 19:44

I got my first at 20. My then flatmate (you know who you are if you're reading this!) pinned it on the kitchen cupboard door with a big poster pointing to it .
Am not really bothered about grey hairs though. Can't afford expensive hairdresser trips, and would make a shocking job of doing it myself. I really don't want to end up like my mil who sleeps on a teatowel for fear of red hair dye staining the pillow!

squidler · 18/02/2008 19:48

I like my grey hair. I also like my grey eyebrows hairs .

They are part of me, I suppose, and I like that I think they are pretty special!

FrayedKnot · 18/02/2008 19:57
