Alternative to white trainers

I suddenly feel quite mumsy in white trainers. I have lived in these for last 5-10 years but I am wondering if they’ve had their day.

But I don’t know what to replace them with. They were such a good compromise, casual and comfy but still a smarter edge over sporty trainers. Wore them to work.

I am approaching 50 and am on the older side in the company I work for and want to feel a bit more current in what I wear. Any ideas?

Metallic, maybe? I have a pair of silver New Balance that seem to go with most things.

I hate the word mumsy. On a site designed for mothers it seems especially silly too.

I also feel a bit over white trainers. Chucked mine at the end of last summer and don’t think I’ll replace. I’ve been wearing New Balance 327s - dark green ones and black/tan ones - but am wondering about getting some Hoff for the summer, or maybe something in beige/cream/leopard if such a thing exists.

Either that or I’ll go totally old school and look for another pair of black/tan suede Pumas that died in the quick sand on Crosby beach!

I would pick a smart style but any colour that goes with your wardrobe. Metallic is nice. Brights are also nice.

White is still fine IMO but maybe you are just bored after many years the same!

Hi OP, I'm 52 and over the last few years I've worn the midi dress/white trainers combo and I'm starting to think it's that particular look which is mumsy, not the white trainers per se.

Converse high tops look good with a dress. But I still think white trainers work with both wide-legged trousers and skinnies.

New Balance 327s seem quite popular and they come in different colours although they are more on the sporty than smart side imo.

I am another who hates the word mumsy.
It is a misogynistic word IMO.

Agreed, and sadly it’s women doing it to themselves. I’ve never heard a man say it.

You do hear people talking about 'dad bodies' and dressing like a dad, so I think the problem is maybe more ageist than sexist. And that's why no one wants to look 'mumsy' or 'frumpy' because these are code words for old and not shaggable.

To answer the question though, I'm coming around to rediscovering proper shoes. Because trainers are so comfortable I've been living in them, but they aren't as nice looking as ankle boot and the new mules I just bought but haven't broken in yet because they are so heavy compared to my trainers. I want pretty ballet flats again as well.

Pigtailsandall · 13/05/2023 08:29

I got some cream/yellow colourway trainers a few months back and they feel much more fun and "current" than pure white ones. I also have bright red adidas ones which brings a bit of colour in if I'm in my usual jeans + neutral top -combo.

Or you could go totally off-piste and swap trainers for plimsolls, ballet flats, loafers etc

I think we need to reclaim the word mumsy and not just view its negative connotations. It’s a positive word for me now depicting confidence, stability, resourcefulness and pragmatism!
I have bought a pair of Hoffs . Rome ones although they slip as I walk so I am about to go out wearing my trusty white Nike internationalists!
Mumsy they may be but also all the above positives too!

I agree, I like being mumsy and I'm claiming it as my fashion. Who bloody cares. No f**ks given here. I love my floral dresses and converse. I spend all week in my work uniform so I want to feel pretty and comfortable on the school run, for shopping and the weekends. I'm now searching Vinted for more florals.

In that vein I'm inventing a fashion called 'catsy' as I love cat patterned clothes

I wear lots of Lady V flowery and cat patterns with trainers and don't give any fucks

LaCerbiatta · 13/05/2023 11:40

Do mums like flowery patterns? I never did....

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 13/05/2023 11:48
