Fancy shops that only display one size (small)

I'm 44, size 12/14 and I need to look up to date for work. There's a top end department store near me in Dublin which has just had very big update. They have some nice brands in there, high end high street and some accessible designer stuff.
But the new format gives me the rage. In each concession, they only display one of each item, and its always a size 8, 10, or small. If you have the audacity to be larger than this you have to chase down a shop assistant to ask for larger size.
Does anyone like this format? Does it sell more because women can't stand to look at larger sizes?
The men's section displays S,M and L. It feels really sizeist and sexist!
Just a rant really, the way they display clothes means I've never bought anything from there shrug

That sounds a right pain.

I've never come across this before!

That sounds bizarre because it obviously makes more work, plus if someone buys the size 8, that style is then not there at all until replaced.
When I read your thread title I assumed you'd be talking about a very small shop that didn't have space for 10 copies of each item to be out and so did this to display more styles but it doesn't sound like space is an issue here.

I'd be really surprised if this set up sold more. I'm a size 6 and probably wouldn't bother asking for my size if they were only displaying an 8 or 10, unless I really liked it and really needed it. And once I knew this was the set up in the shop, I probably wouldn't bother going back, as it sounds like a hassle that will add time.

Is it presented in a really fussy way so they don't want to have to replace the display model?

A sales assistant in Selfridges in London once rolled her eyes at me when I asked her if they stored a larger size of a £800 dress.
I have never been back in there. But cause I’m embarrassed and still upset. And still haven’t lost weight 😁

Don't be embarrassed. You wouldn't be embarrassed if it were shoes.

Is that Brown Thomas? Or somewhere else? Either way, I don’t understand why you can’t just order from their website? Or any other website in Europe. You have so much choice!

Because it is nice to see something in the flesh before committing? Otherwise no shops would exist!

GallopingGreen · 13/05/2023 07:43

This sounds so annoying! I'm similar age and size and like to look through the tops as sometimes I can judge whether I need the 12 or the 14 just by looking at it. Also I need to see it in my size to know whether it will be a flattering style or not and whether I'll bother trying it on.

Also by having to ask for it in your size won't sell more. Half the time im trying stuff in shops I pick up one or two random extra things just to see and because im already trying stuff on anyway... sometimes they end up being the nicest and I buy them!

Having to ask every time sounds like such a faff!

Which shop is it? In dundrum or town?

Marlaysydney12 · 13/05/2023 07:46

Yes, the new BT in Dundrum.
I think they are aiming to be like the Selfridges Sweetwindinmyhead mentioned.
The BT website isn't great either, and I prefer shopping in store for things like dresses and blazers, where they need to fit well.

I don't buy clothes often but haven't come across this. I shop in M&S and John Lewis though and they usually have sizes 8-18 out.

In fairness, I’ve always found the staff in that store very obliging in going and getting the various sizes. I just ask if they have this in X size.

The clothing area in that store is relatively small so the couldn’t really display the full range of sizes if the want to carry the range of items. I don’t find they look down on anyone who isn’t a size 6, most of them aren’t that size themselves.

Having said that, I do wonder how successful that particular store is, the clothing area is never busy.
