Hi all,

I’m currently growing out my hair. It had a lot of dye build up and I just want a fresh start. My natural hair is dark brown with approx 40% grey. When all the dye is fully grown out I’d like to go blonde as I’m sick of dying it dark and then seeing the grey 2 weeks later. I think being lighter it’ll be less obvious.

Can anyone tell me how a hairdresser will get me from dark brown/grey to blonde? Will highlights work? How would the grey be covered?

Please advise, as I’m worried I’ll have grown it all out for nothing

I don't know the answer but would suggest going to talk to a hairdresser and let them advise

Speak to a proper colourist who will do the job properly- and hopefully had lots of practice at doing this. Balayage appears to be a popular strategy though, when done properly.

First you will have to get the previous dye stripped off, this will take time and probably be relatively expensive.

You may want to think about cutting it shorter to shorten the process (the ends will be worst)

Once you have a blank canvas you can do anything - I'd probably go for an overall colour more like your natural shade.

I’m blonde at the moment. I would love to go grey but my hairdresser has told me at I’ve still got too much of my own natural colour left( dark mousy blonde) for it to look good . So I get it dyed , with highlights every 3 rd or 4 th visit.

It’s very expensive. I went somewhere cheaper but they used a lot of peroxide to lighten my hair and destroyed the condition. My new ( more expensive) hairdresser says that you have to use peroxide to lighten hair but need to be very careful about how you do that

My hair was definitely in better condition when it was darker. And my roots show through after about 3 weeks.

An overall colour will make regrowth (if 40% grey) really noticeable.

Of course your hairdresser will say this. You/your colouring is paying the vast majority of her bills. People on the "colour treadmill" are hairdressers bread and butter!
