From dark hair with highlights to all over dark: is hairdresser necessary??

I've got a growing out head of highlights on dark brown hair that have gone brassy and dry.

I'd like to return to full dark brown hair, but not black.

Is it worth paying for the hairdresser to do this, or can I get achieved a good all over tint from a good brand of DIY colour and toner?

I did that recently myself. I had to use two dyes as the first attempt went a bit khaki. The second dye I put over the top had a slight red tone to it. It worked and looked fine.

I also had the same done at the hairdresser several years ago and it went a bit grey. I had a better result when I did it myself tbh.

@Lovemebetter thanks - do you remember what brand of home colour you used when it worked well?

I wouldn’t bother with a hairdresser, just leave the box dye on the lighter bits longer. If worried about going green either use one with a red tone, or use a red one first on the blonde bits then all over with the colour you want.

I used L’Oréal Paris no 6 natural light brown (it was dark) and also L’Oréal Paris 700 dark blonde which is more golden.
