Bag for every day use when most of the day is on foot

I've had a few Kipling bags (a S&B crime I hear) but the latest has destroyed the upper thigh/lower hip of two pairs of jeans through rubbing.
I walk everywhere and am out and about most days and need a bag that will hold the usual things: wallet, keys, inhaler, pen, painkillers, sanpro, tissues and bits of lego. Can anyone recommend anything please? I used to love accessorize canvas bags for the summer and would like something summery and cheerful. Thanks 😃

Would you want a small backpack to avoid the thigh rub?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 10/05/2023 21:42

A Roka backpack?

AutisticLegoLover · 10/05/2023 22:19

I have thought about a backpack but in the summer I'd get a sweaty back. I walk 10 miles a day up and down big hills and am never one to take my time as always in a rush and get sweaty even in winter Blush I be also like to have my phone to hand and wouldn't want it in a backpack. Although back in the day there used to be backpacks that had a cross body strap with a phone picket on the strap. I wonder if they still exist?

Mia Tui have a great range of bags. I have several of the across body ones.

24KaratCucumber · 12/05/2023 17:07

Have you looked at Healthy back bags or a Roka Willesden sling bag?

AutisticLegoLover · 12/05/2023 17:59

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll have a look.

Backpack or cross body

AutisticLegoLover · 12/05/2023 21:27

I'm still looking and not having much luck. Stylish and practical but not big seems mutually exclusive.

Only ever buy Radley bags. Love them and though not cheap they are great quality and lots of designs

WonderingWanda · 13/05/2023 07:58

10 miles a day? I'd be using a hiking back pack with the mesh panel to stop sweating. No way could I walk that far lugging a shoulder bag.

Jabiru · 13/05/2023 08:36

Another vote for a Roma bag but Brakeburn do some nice cross bodies

AutisticLegoLover · 13/05/2023 08:55

@WonderingWanda that 10 miles is made up of the school run, walking to the shops, walking to my mum's and possibly walking to the shops a second time. I don't drive and walk everywhere. I get a sweaty back even in winter because it involves some big hills and I walk briskly rather than just strolling. If I've got heavy shopping I'll take a rucksack with me but I'd love a bag with a phone compartment on the strap. I've seen one I like but it looks like the phone pouch would be up under my chin. I might order it and see though. It's not very exciting but it might do the trick.

Radley bags are lovely but totally impractical for me. Something waterproof would be a bonus. There was torrential rain here on Thursday and I got soaked to the skin twice on the school runs and my bag contents got soaked too.

I second Mia Tui - I have the purple backpack one as I like to have my hands free, and I love it. They have some good cross-body ones too.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/05/2023 09:50

Troop bag has replaced my Kipling.

EmmaStone · 13/05/2023 09:56

I've got a Roka small rucksack, and also this amazing bag from Decathlon: www.decathlon.fr/p/sac-a-dos-de-randonnee-16l-nh-escape-150-square/_/R-p-334486?mc=8649501&c=NOIR

I've used the Decathlon back for day hikes, it's excellent (and my v serious walking friend has also bought one in blue, but more for city breaks. We8re both on a city break this weekend, and both using our bags 😀)

FairStuff · 13/05/2023 10:07

I think you need a proper rucksack - I always get mine from Osprey. Then a separate place to put your phone. Either a running belt or a specific crossbody phone pouch.

Shellingbynight · 13/05/2023 10:16

You could have a look at Healthy Back Bags, I have two in different sizes. The large baglett, or the small bag, could work for you. The strap is adjustable and you can wear them front/back/over your shoulder, and they have an outside pouch you can use for your phone. They come in nylon/microfibre (multiple colours) which are water repellent.

I like my Longchamp backpack for long days out - but I can’t say I ever walk 10 miles! It’s also not the biggest but it does come in lots of nice colours.

Fjallraven are also nice and colourful.

Lululemon have nice practical backpacks but not so colourful.

I have that Decathlon Bag.
I love how it clips together with magnets.
Love it.

The best bags as a back pack are eastpac. Guaranteed for years

Atishoos · 15/05/2023 22:12

Put one of these on the backpack front strap for your phone. Get a lightweight backpack with mesh guard that arches away from your back to let the air in and prevent sweating. Any outdoor shop will have them.

Bum bag?

Or across body bag?

declutteringmymind · 15/05/2023 22:27

Or cargo pants with lots of pockets?

Ladysaurus · 16/05/2023 08:24

I use a karrimor metro 30.

Lots of different pockets to keep organised. Large inner space in main compartment. And foam strips to lift it away from sweaty back (I have that problem too). This bag had been a game changer. Keeps all my stuff, two bottle holders, cause you of course drink more when walking so much, and keeps my hands free (so you can wrangle kids/so I can catch myself when I am about to fall over).

I've been using backpacks instead of handbags for years but this has been a new level. And one of the best bits... Shove it in the washing machine and it's like I'm getting a brand new one.
