Roll back 10 years I had a full head of corkscrew curls It was my best feature and made my ugly self feel beautiful! After a number of severe traumas all at once my hair started falling out by the clump. I could barely get all my hair into a scrunchie and now it’s about a third of that amount. It’s super thin, super fine and super brittle. Oh and frizzy and fly away. Would straightening it make it look better or just shave it all off I just want my old hair back.

Have you tried biotin tablets and shampoo? Highly recommend them.

Can feel your frustration and empathise. Would you consider consulting a trichologist? Find a trichologist

Perhaps you need your thyroid checked?

mischlerischler · 09/05/2023 02:53

You need to get checked out. It could be a variety of things.

Rogaine helps, but once you stop using it the hair loss will come back if the underlying cause is not fixed.

I would try GP, or even better dermatologist if you can.

I think do it, it will probably be really liberating. Also then your hair can regrow 'starting fresh'

2021x · 09/05/2023 05:43

Please do it. My hair started falling out during COVID. After several attempts to cut it short, it has started recovering, and I am now trying to grow it back out. It is much easier to manage when it is shorter, and I got it cut every six weeks.

Ladybird69 · 09/05/2023 23:54

Thanks for your replies. I’m awaiting results of a blood test for low vit B12 as I’m feeling rather unwell too, but shall ask Drs for a thyroid test and get some biotin and a severe haircut in the meantime. Thanks again.

Vitamin D
Ferritin (needs to be above 70 for hair growth but Drs mark it ‘normal’ far lower)
Thyroid
B12
Perri

Can all affect hair growth/loss. I hope you get your lovely hair to grow back.

I was referred to a dermatologist by my GP after my usually thin, fine hair started falling out and thinning to the point individual strands were barely visible. My GP had tested Ferritin which was 25 ( came back normal ) and vitamin D was low too. The dermatologist put me on a high loading dose of ferrous fumerate and also a high dose vitamin D tablet. After retesting ferritin I then was prescribed a daily dose of ferrous fumerate (higher than you can generally buy but nothing like the course of the loading dose, ) and minodoxyl to massage into my scalp. I couldn’t use the minodoxyl as it irritated my very sensitive skin but after a few months the shedding began to stall and very gradually my hair started thickened and within 18 months was back to its usual state. I would definitely ask for a referral to a trichologist or dermatologist or if you can pay yourself, see someone privately as heaven knows what the waiting list is like at the moment.

MedievalMadness · 10/05/2023 00:44

BloodyInternetWierdos. Yes the dermatologist I saw, said ferritin needs to be 70 but preferably as near to 100 as you can get it, for hair health. She said tests come back normal because something 30ish is ok as that’s not low enough to make you anaemic, but it’s not enough if you nave hair thinning and/or loss.

Ladybird69 · 12/05/2023 00:42

Thanks for your replies. Yes @BloodyInternetWeirdos I hope it comes back too thanks.
I had the results back apparently my b12 is fine ferritin levels weren’t mentioned, my vit d was bit low but apparently my blood sugars were through the roof and the nurse was surprised that the dr hadn’t contacted me so now I’ve got to wait for a diabetic nurse to ring me. And I’ll check my ferritin levels but nurse I spoke to was way more concerned over the sugars She said the levels of blood sugars were 122, and should be 47 at most. she said that Those results would make me feel really poorly and basically wiped out on the floor. So hopefully if I get some treatment I can feel better. I’m going to get a call from the diabetes nurse tomorrow so I’ll ask her about my hair then. I was a bit in shock earlier and I forgot 🥴sorry for the long essay
