Is there somewhere I can go to learn how to look good

I’m over fifty, miserable and a mess. I lost a ton of weight last year but divorcing and life made me prioritise ice cream over my health. Help! I want a one stop shop to tell me what to do.

You will get through this. No idea of a place like but can I suggest - start from being kind to yourself and take time to heal, how you would treat a child that needs support.

Make a list of each area you want to sort out (diet, rest, fitness, skin, hair, style, teeth, make up etc) and take a week researching what you can do to improve, look for the best experts in each area. People here will help.

I’m the meantime, pick 3 easy things to start immediately, like drink more water, walk more, laugh more - whatever is good for you and will pick you up immediately. And praise yourself each day for sticking with them. It’s not just the looks, it’s your energy that need a revival, that’s how I felt reading your post.

I feel your pain! Flowers

Menopants · 08/05/2023 12:25

Thank you both. I was reading one of the many menopausal threads about just not giving a shit about anything anymore and that’s me. I came out all guns blazing when my h left, I pulled my child through a horrible year and she is off to college next year. I’m kind of done tbh. I want to Pul my pants up and get on with stuff but then is just have a family pack of mini rolls for dinner and ugly cry. I throw the best pity parties. I am going to do some yoga and try to cook today

I won’t claim to know what you are going through OP but what I do know is what it’s like to be down on yourself and eat accordingly. You have got this far and helped someone else both are to be commended so please don’t think harshly of yourself. Don’t try and do everything all at once. I think small things that you can do over the long term and give you successes will mean you feel better later down the line and give you the motivation to do more and hey if you have a bad day, you have a bad day and tomorrow is a new day.

Have you considered HRT, OP? Brought my colleague back to life.

Menopants · 08/05/2023 13:30

I am considering hrt but there is so much information about it I feel completely overwhelmed. The pill made me completely mental so I am v cautious about mucking about with hormones.

The Channel 5 show Ten Years Younger?!

Otherwise I don't think there is a single place. There's make up artists and make up counters and millions of skincare ranges and dentists and hairdressers and personal shoppers and image consultants and beauty therapists and manicurists and aestheticians. There's Stitch Fix and Lookiero. And as per pp, HRT. If you have a womb you need progesterone (Mirena coil or Utrogestan) with any estrogen (patches, gel or spray). Give that three months and you'll see what if any effect it has.

John Lewis do a free book online assistant. You go in and try on all the clothes they pick for you. No obligation to buy. (Debenhams similar service was fab!).

I'd love something like this. I feel like a big part of my upbringing/ education was missed. My parents were very much appearance doesn't matter (beyond being clean and tidy and respectably dressed) and I was never taught anything. I can't even do a pony tail. I know nothing about nails or hair removal or make up that I haven't learned through trial and error and im never confident about it.

Other women seem to just know stuff that is completely alien to me.

BeverlyBrook · 08/05/2023 22:17

Phone up Suzanna Constantine and age if she's up for one more episode?!

I think you need a coach. Someone to check in with each month. To review progress, set goals and make achievable plans.

As that is the only way to consistently achieve change in a positive lasting way.

You can't do everything at once. But small changes all add up.

Book in with a personal stylist, just Google ones in your area. A few also offer lifestyle coaching which might be of interest.

I've used one. She went through my wardrobe, we got rid of things that didn't suit, she suggested new outfit ideas and explained the gaps. Could have then booked a follow up shopping trip too.

thedevilinablackdress · 09/05/2023 06:58

Books? I always love the health and beauty section in a good library.

Menopants · 09/05/2023 07:14

Lots of great ideas. I keep putting off new clothes as my weight is so up and down but maybe I need to accept I’m a bit bigger just now.

I use to laugh at 10 years younger but now it’s me potentially standing in the street in a grey cardigan looking sad while strangers say I look 78.

thank you everyone for the kind words.
