What should/could I be using?
Vit c, retinol?
My skin is quite dull and I use Estée Lauder double wear now but I want a glow.

Would a routine look like this?
Am
Cleanser
Vit c
Serum
Spf 50

Pm
Double cleanse
Toner
Retinol

Help would be appreciated please

Hi OP,

The products I've used and would recommend are:

AM
Cerave hydrating cleanser
Byoma gel moisturiser
Beauty of Joseon sunscreen

PM
Bioderma micellar water
Cerave hydrating cleanser

I think vitamin c can work well under sunscreen but I prefer to only use a few products at once.

I’m in love with the Avène range as I have combo sensitive skin prone to acne also prone to eczema.
it doesn’t irritate and doesn’t cause breakouts.
try their thermal spring mineral spray as a toner, either mist directly on or spray into a cotton pad.
as a first stage in a double cleanse I also love super facialist vit c oil, it dissolves everything spf, foundation, mascara, it contains olive oil and smells of oranges, as soon as it hits water it turns to a milk for easy rinse off.

If you want a glow, the EL foundation you are using is not going to help achieve that. Try Armani Luminous Silk or Nars liquid foundation (glowy kind).

SkyandSurf · 08/05/2023 10:43

That's quite a matte foundation if you're looking for glow. If you like it though, you could mix another product with it like Charlotte Tilbury flawless filter.

Giorgio Armani luminous silk is good and has a glow but it's much more sheer than the EL double wear so it won't give you the coverage you're used to.

I’m 43 and I use tretinoin which I swear by. My skin is so clear and glowing. I really notice it in photos too.

Drinking plenty of water and a good diet also helps. And spf 50 every day. I use Clinique City Block.

I am 43, living in sunny Australia. This is my AM/ PM routine:

AM
Gentle cleanse
Vit c
Vit B
Moisturiser
SPF 50

I alternate my nighttime routines over 3 days so it's as follows:
PM
Double cleanse (love a balm and then a gentle cleanser)
Night 1: Active- AHA/ BHA overnight treatment or (wash off) active mask containing the same and then Night 3 routine
Night 2: Active- Retinol, vit a night cream
Night 3: moisture boost- night serum and night cream or moisture/ hydro overnight mask
Repeat.

If I know I am going to be out in the sun the next day or I have been out in the sun and feel my skin needs it, I skip the active treatments and go for the moisture boost.

I don't get treatments because I live very rurally so I focus on my skincare instead

I also don't freak out if I get out of step on my PM routine and double up or miss a night out.

pinkyponkyplink · 05/06/2023 00:08

@stardust777 will those products work for me. I'm so clueless. I'm tempted to go to no7 and buy their new stuff containing retinol

I am 44 and use simple face wash

then Nivea moisturiser

my skin is very clear and healthy people comment on it

I am tempted to change it up due to my age! Just find it all a bit overwhelming all those products!

VerveClique · 05/06/2023 09:58

@Remmy123 I am very similar! Watching with interest.

Yetisrus · 05/06/2023 10:03

45 here, I literally cleanse and moisturise. I use an olive oil soap from Greece on my face in the morning (it doesn't dry my face like normal soap) and a hot cloth cleanser from Aldi at night. I use Nivea Q10 moisturiser.

I don't get spots, don't have wrinkles. Skin is very clear and smooth.

Oh and drink lots of water.

Workawayxx · 05/06/2023 10:07

I’m 43 and do:

am:
superfacialist vit c cleansing oil - wipe off with warm flannel
vit c serum
spritz with wild mint toner spray (will use rose water when it runs out)
Hado labo gold hyalauronic acid serum - 2 layers with spritz in between
spf50 or moisturiser

pm:
cleanse face with hot cloth cleanser then second cleanse of avene oat cleanser
skin and me - mine has tretinoin, niacinimide and azaleic acid. This is great as they put all the actives that will suit your skin and also gradually build up the strength or adjust of it’s not suiting your skin.
I wait 10 mins then use corsx snail mucin, a layer of Hado labo (as per am routine) then cerave moisturiser

my skin is getting loads better and everything I use is under £15 a bottle (some under £10) apart from the skin&me. I no longer get the cakey/separated foundation look so am using up all the foundations I bought then thought it was the foundation’s fault that it looked cakey!

That sounds like a really sensible routine, I'm not sure why you've separated out vitamin C and a separate serum though (unless there's a particular serum you had in mind?). Most vitamin Cs will come in serum form.

As others have said, ditching the double wear will also do you massive favours!

cocksstrideintheevening · 05/06/2023 10:45

I use tret (dermatica) my formulation has nyacinimide (sp?) and azaelic acid in at night and in the morning just use SPF, currently using a body shop spray one which I really like.

Couple of nights a week I slap on a thick layer of blue nivea.

The tret has taken a while but it has made a big difference, much glowier and redness has been reduced.

stardust777 · 05/06/2023 14:08

@pinkyponkyplink I find it's trial and error with skincare. Hopefully some of my faves will work for you too. Good luck!

partypeople · 05/06/2023 16:16

I agree with pp that skincare is very much trial and error, and highly subjective to what suits your skin type, lifestyle, diet, where you live, how much time you have of an evening etc. etc. No way to know what works for you other than to try it, unfortunately.

That said, I'd start slow and focus on one thing/product at a time, especially when you're basically starting from scratch. It's much easier to notice what does and doesn't work for your skin if you're introducing one thing at a time rather than twenty all at once! Cleanser-wise, I'd use something cheap and cheerful - the point of a cleanser is to clean your skin (duh) so the more hardworking products have a good base to work their magic on. Spend your money on these, and just find a cleanser you're happy to use twice a day. Cerave is pretty good I find.

If you're after a glow, a Vit C that works for you is the best place to start, along with a sunscreen (because ideally you should apply SPF when using Vit C). My fave is the Medik8 one (C-Tetra) - it's super light and absorbs easily, doesn't feel tacky etc. It's brightened up my skin quite a lot in the 6+ months I've used it. Plus since I only apply it AM, a bottle lasts for ever and it doesn't oxide like some others I've tried previously can (shout out to Timeless Vit C though which was my previous fave before they stopped selling it in the UK!).

For SPF I find La-Roche Posay's Anthelios range the best - their SPF50 is light and (for my skin) hydrating enough that I don't need a separate moisturiser.

Retinol is tricky if you've never tried it before and should be eased into slowly. Once you've got the Vit C + sunscreen basics, it could serve as a good base for introducing retinol and/or other actives!
