Is there anyway to save a bra that's got a wire poking out?

Past attempts never work and I don't want to risk ruining my washing machine

After many failed sew up jobs I found the only way was to get a small piece of gross grain ribbon (doesn't fray) and use it as a patch over where the hole is. Stitch it very well to make sure there are no gaps or loose bits around the edges.

PuffinsRocks · 07/05/2023 22:32

Push the wire back into its tunnel and sew over the hole where it was poking out?

dudsville · 07/05/2023 22:33

Yes to needle and thread!

Chocolate376 · 07/05/2023 22:33

I force the wire back in and handstitch a piece of ribbon thoroughly over the hole.
Underwired bras should only go in the machine in a bra bag anyway.

DramaAlpaca · 07/05/2023 22:34

I've sewn them back in a couple of times, but the repair never lasts unfortunately and they pop out again.

For washing, you can get little net bags you can put bras in to protect the washing machine, or else use a button fastening pillow case.

Push the wire back in and super glue up the hole.

Vinniepolis · 07/05/2023 22:53

I’ve only had this happen with M&S bras over the last 5 years or so - I sew them
up but it never lasts. Are there other brands to avoid?

GettingStuffed · 07/05/2023 23:22

I pull the wire out and wear it as my round the house bra.

SirenSays · 07/05/2023 23:25

I've repaired so many but it never lasts

Darkroot · 07/05/2023 23:27

Needle and thread a then sticky moleskin over the top!

Darkroot · 07/05/2023 23:28

And if worried about it coming out in the washing machine, wash your bras in those netted laundry bags. If the wire escapes then it stays in the bag!

WestOfWestminster · 07/05/2023 23:31

This thread has reassured me my lack of sewing skills is not the reason the wire always pokes its way back out again post-repair. Thanks Op.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/05/2023 23:32

Washing machines don't like bras and bras don't like washing machines. You'll either end up with a broken bra or a broken washing machine.

Take the wire out and use it to wear around the house.

As some pps have said, I sew dense ribbon over the end where the wire is poking out. I make sure there’s at least a double layer of ribbon everywhere, and more where I’ve tucked the ends inside.

Use tiny stitches and sew into the edges of the channel covering the wire - it’s easier. Go back and forward with your stitches at least twice.

I’ve done with this with several bras and never needed to repair them again. The bra lasts until the straps have no elasticity any more.

I save the ribbon from boxes of chocolates, gift bag handles, etc to use for this

Please don't trust the net bags. I've had a bra rip right through one (and catch the rubber lining of the washing machine and unsecure it). I only ever use pillow cases now sealed with a hair bobble, or tied in a knot itself. I use A fleecy pillow case,
thicker than cotton. I always thought the bags were adequate until this happened

BusterGonad · 08/05/2023 12:35

Surely if this happens regularly then you need need to get remeasured, it's a sure sign of an ill fitting bra!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/05/2023 12:44

I've never found a successful way to stop the wire poking out almost immediately. But I haven't tried grosgrain ribbon or superglue...I will next time.

You need a different bra size!!!

CC222 · 08/05/2023 12:56

I find sewing it back never lasts for long. If the wire is sharp, dip it in nail varnish to smooth over the tip to prevent it scratching you.

Shitsville123 · 08/05/2023 13:18

Some of those wires are cut at the end and really sharpe. This cuts at the material and cuts a hole through it. Others are blunt at the end and it doesn't happen. I've also only found it happen with M&S bras.

I've tried stitching but I agree it doesn't last long.
