Really waterproof long coat?

Bearpawk · 07/05/2023 11:31

I'm having a nightmare, please help?
Looking for:
Lightweight
Very long (below knees)
A- line so unfortunately the long 'Rains' model isn't suitable
VERY WATERPROOF (not just showerproof)

Ilse jacobsen looked promising but just too short
Uniqlo blocktech used to do an a-line parka model but not waterproof enough

Any other suggestions ?

Seasalt are great worth looking on their site.

I wanted something similar but gave up in the end and found a nice one from Durbarry instead, I decided that if it was really that wet and I needed to be out then I’d wear waterproof trousers (not something that really belongs in S&B however).

Barbour did some very long, very waterproof ones, Barbour is a bit marmite though so it’s not for everyone I’ve got a couple and they do keep the water out.

I think you’d need a thicker fabric to be that long. I did try on a full length, thin waterproof while searching and it all got rather flappy and clingy around the legs.

Could someone do a link please to the Jack Murphy Erin coat and the Jack Murphy Malvern coat.
I can't do links - apologies.

The Dubarry Alderford looks good too.

Long dry robe. I have an equidry and it's possibly the best functioning coat I've ever had.
Alternatively use a wash in waterproofer treatment like Nik wax on one you have already

I also have an equidry! My two sons have one too. They are the most waterproof coats I have ever had.

For warmer weather, when you don't need more than a cardigan or very light jacket if the weather is dry, I have an excellent poncho that comes down well past my knees (and I'm pretty tall for a woman). If I've got my backpack on with my laptop etc inside, I just put the poncho on over the top! Makes me look like a weird hunchback but I am dry so I am happy. People might think I look silly but they are very envious when the heavens open and they're soaking wet! And of course you can just whip it off again if the rain stops. I got the L/XL for the length, I don't think it really matters what clothing size you are (I'm a 12).

And for the perfect truly waterproof coat that'll be fine in Autumn, Winter and Spring (bit warm for summer), I recommend https://www.longcoats.co.uk/

Doesn't look 'horsey' warm waterproof and flattering.

Bearpawk · 08/05/2023 11:13

Thanks @WildFlowerBees I have a north face one like this but I'm looking for lightweight not warm now.

The country/ horse riding ones do look very waterproof but also not quite my style - i'm into the more scandi look. stutterheim is the contender atm - I'd better get saving.

I’m also looking for the same golden unicorn! A long lightweight waterproof coat which looks stylish and neutral. No big logos or awful colours. One of those changing robe things would be ideal if it didn’t have awful logos slapped all over it.

BiddyPop · 08/05/2023 12:36

I have a longer length Ilse Jacobsen which comes to a bit below my knees that I love. I'm 5'4".

I had a smaller size for 5 years and got the larger one last year (to fit my current size) when returning to windy, rainy, seafront train platforms commuting. Smaller 1 was still perfectly functional just didn't zip anymore around me and I have been through some torrential downpours in both and never got wet underneath (except once with a badly lined up splash from a bus speeding through a puddle going up my sleeve).

Whereas my HellyHansen "waterproof" jackets for sailing have left me quite wet on occasion (whether sailing, shore crew or hiking)...

BiddyPop · 08/05/2023 12:38

Sorry have now read the rest of the thread seeing you've tried that. (I also wear a backpack over my coat with my stuff).

fatbobschum · 08/05/2023 12:41

Musto are a sailing brand. Their waterproof coats are absolutely waterproof. I highly recommend this coats and it's on sale (I've got 2, they are excellent) https://www.musto.com/en_gb/sardinia-long-rain-jkt-fw-82022

I have this Didrikson one. Not A line, but easy to walk in and I'm 5'11" and it's past my knees.

Oldraver · 18/05/2023 18:19

I bought a Barbour one a few months ago, will try and find a link. Think it's called Bowness

RedRosie · 18/05/2023 20:00

(You can even filter for "A" shapes)

Bearpawk · 02/06/2023 09:13

Thanks for all of the help everyone. I was looking ah Didriksons but...
As luck would have it - found a nearly new Stutterheim Mosseback on vinted and made a cheeky offer of £125 and got it !
