If you’re a size 8+, which trainers make your feet look smaller?

Question as above. Many trainers look clownishly long or massively clumpy on my size 9 feet, so any suggestions that shorten the foot a little would be very welcome. I'd love something a bit retro-looking like New Balance 327s (I've never tried them, so no idea how they’d look on me). No black, no all-white, no neon colours and no Adidas. Bonus points if they’re flattering on slight cankles (so presumably fairly low-cut?).

Thank you in advance!

I've got size 8.5 and trainers that I live in are converse ( not the normal low ones or high tops) but the danity ballets. I think because the top bit is shorter , In that it only covers half the front of my feet it makes my feet look smaller if that makes sense.

dollparts85 · 06/05/2023 21:54

These!

If you’re a size 8+, which trainers make your feet look smaller?
AllOrNothingSituation · 06/05/2023 21:59

None tbh I don’t wear trainers as I’m a size 8 but only 5ft4 so they all look awful on me and make my feet look huge

PauliesWalnuts · 06/05/2023 22:09

I’m 5ft6 and wear a 9. For knocking about I wear Adidas shell toe or Gazelles in navy or red - I know you don’t wear Adidas but I’m an aficionado so that’s all I wear. Basically you need a round toe and do your laces straight across and not crisscross.
For exercise I wear Saucony or Brooks - they both do women’s fittings in above an 8, rather than just flogging you men’s trainers. For walking boots I wear Hanwag for serious mileage and Salomon for easy walks.

justaskingaquestion · 06/05/2023 22:16

Try Nike Tanjun - they're my go to.

Zebracat · 06/05/2023 22:19

I got some NBs, not the 327 s but I forget which. I bought 8.5 and they were marginally too small, but my feet looked tiny in them. Size up. I gave them to my friend who’s an 8 usually and her feet also look tiny in them.

Kickingupmerrybehaviour · 06/05/2023 22:20

Following with interest. Same problem here.

TwoRedKittens · 06/05/2023 22:45

Thanks, everyone!

dollparts85, I already have several pairs of high and low-top Converse but haven’t tried the dainty ballerina ones yet, so will give them a shot.

PauliesWalnuts, I wore Adidas Gazelles all through my very unfashionable teenage years and somehow can’t face buying them again, even though they were really flattering indeed. For anyone without that particular teenage trauma, they’re definitely a good suggestion! My running shoes are Brooks and I have Salomon hiking boots, and while both are extremely comfortable, they’re not terribly stylish.

Thanks, justaskingaquestion, I agree that Nike Tanjuns are quite flattering, but I already have them in black and would like an alternative.

Zebracat, if you happen to remember which NBs you bought or still have the order confirmation, please let me know. I remember having really nice NBs years ago (no idea which model) but the last ones I ordered made my feet look huge so I had to return them.

I've stopped caring and wear Saucony men's trainers. I have bunions and a claw toe and I am just not prepared to have uncomfortable feet ever again. I'd recommend wide legged trousers...

wheresmyshoe · 06/05/2023 22:50

Gazelles or I look like I have clown feet

Laurel33 · 06/05/2023 22:58

Same here :(

The most flattering styles I've found are ones where the 'eyelet stay' (the bit the eyelets go through) ends close to your toes. Gives the illusion that your feet are shorter and neater than they are. A properly rounded 'snub' toe works best too.

Converse don't work at all for me sadly - too narrow and the long toe box and small, slightly pointed toe caps just accentuate the problem.

These are a fairly good example of the style I mean, and come in loads of colours.

These are good too. I have a pair and they're much prettier on than in the photo.

Also following this thread with interest to see what others suggest!

Laurel33 · 06/05/2023 23:03

Some Superga are a good shape too but come in a bit narrow for my feet.

WinterDeWinter · 06/05/2023 23:10

Size 6 ones.

sorry. I find that clumpy 80s style mid tops eg nike court force or air force shrink my feet because they’re supposed to look big - a bit like a big jumper can be slimming because the viewer over compensates :-D

Newname2323 · 06/05/2023 23:16

Nike air forces make everyone's feet look small imo

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 06/05/2023 23:22

Rounded ones like Adidas Superstars, just to give you an idea. If you add flared/wide leg trousers (since they're coming back in fashion)that rest right on top you'll look like you have really small feet.

Abcdefgh1234 · 07/05/2023 00:02

I’n 5ft6 and size 10. So i use man shoes unfortunately. Its so hard to find trainers as man shoes are so wide. But i’m in love with my veja. Its size 10. Man shoes still. But it does makes my feet look smaller and its so slim. I recommend veja. Its first time ever i like my trainers

backawayfatty1 · 07/05/2023 00:35

Size 8.5 here. Just got a pair of Nike air max, thought my feet would look massive in them but pleasantly surprised

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 07/05/2023 00:40

I’m a size 8-9 depending on the shoe brand. I get the clown shoe look, urgh! I’m glad I’m not alone.

TwoRedKittens · 07/05/2023 09:48

Laurel33, thank you! I can see all of those working quite well on a larger foot and you’ve reminded me to try Supergas again, they really are a good summer shoe. I’m 5’11”, so my feet aren’t actually wildly out of proportion to the rest of my body (still get the clown shoe effect with many shoes, though) and I can just about get away with Converse. Or maybe I’m just kidding myself because I love them.

Thank you, WinterDeWinter, Newname2323 and backawayfatty1, I’ll definitely be trying Nike Court Force, Air Force and Airmax! The ’big jumper effect’ is exactly what I was looking for here - I’d like a pair of properly comfy, chunky retro trainers and am a bit bored of always buying the slim canvas styles to avoid adding bulk to my large feet.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus, I’m sure your advice is spot-on, but Adidas Superstars (and similar shapes) with a wide or flared leg take me right back to my awkward and chubby teenage self and I unfortunately just can’t do it.

justprance · 07/05/2023 13:13

Another vote for converse. I really love them

PerryMenno · 07/05/2023 13:41

I'm same height and shoe size as you OP - I wear whatever trainers I like and don't particularly care what people think, but my Onitsuka Tigers are fairly neat and flattering. Similar profile to Converse but a million times more comfortable!

justaskingaquestion · 07/05/2023 22:34

This has given me a bit of hope actually. I'm going to try some of these. I'd love to just not care but...I do!

Zebracat · 08/05/2023 15:26

The New Balance were 373 mens.
